Description	:	Amanda Crider Smith, wife of "Gideon Boyd Smith" was buried in the Cresaptown United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cresaptown, Maryland. Also buried in the cemetery were her Mother-In-Law, "Elizabeth Honey Blackhead Smith" and her nephew, "Marvin Smith". The tombstones for Amanda and her family cannot be found. The church had been rebuilt and the roads were constructed over the original cemetery. Relatives were notified to have the graves moved to another cemetery if desired. The graves that were not claimed by relatives of the deceased were moved by the construction crew and reburied in a common grave with a common marker (1964) on the South/East side of the church. Graves were moved at least twice for construction purposes. The original church was built in 1784 of what was then a sheep pasture. In 1950 a new church was built and an addition was built onto it in 1965. The original tombstones that were not moved and were in the way of the new road were said to have been broken up by the workers during the construction work and buried under the road behind the church. This was common knowledge among the local residence of that time period and was not talked about. The final resting place for Amanda Crider Smith is unknown. Amanda was alive as of April 1930 as she appeared in the census of that year. The only family member that I have since located in this cemetery since this biography was written many years ago is that of her nephew, Marvin E. Smith (brn 4 Jul 1903). I discovered Marvin's tombstone lying flat and buried under the lawn of the cemetery. I actually had to dig around it and expose it removing all the grass and dirt from it's face. It's located very close to Bell St. SW. north of the cement pedestrian walkway. This gives credibility to my family oral history that they had "built a road" over the graves. If you look across Bell St. SW. you will see several tombstones that are next to the road and up against the property line of the residence there. Amanda Crider and her mother-in-law Elizabeth "Honey Blackhead" Smith's (who was part Indian) graves are still unknown to us. UPDATED: 3/10/2020. Date of birth, date and place of death confirmed thru her death certificate.
