Read More	Death came to Mrs. Amanda Stark, who had lived in McCook County longer than any of its present citizens, on June 19, 1943, after a long illness and at the advanced age of 89 years, eight months and eight days. In June 1942 the aged lady suffered two paralytic strokes and the last year of her life she was a bedridden invalid because of them, but in spite of her affliction she remained patient and cheerful until the end. On several occasions during the past 10 months her condition was so bad that death appeared to be imminent, but always she rallied with an amazing energy. The funeral services were on Monday afternoon, a short service being conducted at her home and then Rev. J. W. Proper officiated at the service in the Methodist church. Burial was made in Wildwood cemetery, and six of her grandsons – Roy and Earl Gapp, Ernest and Lemme Herting, George Arnold and Merlin Green were the pall bearers. Amanda Cook was born on October 11, 1853 at Viroqua, Wisconsin. She was a daughter of Rev. James Cook, the Methodist minister at that place. She grew to young womanhood there and on June 1, 1874 was united in marriage to Lemuel Stark. After the birth of their first two sons, Willard and James, they decided to move to Dakota Territory, and came to this county in a covered wagon in 1878. They homesteaded on the farm three miles south and one mile west which was to be their home for more than 30 years, and here seven more children were born to them. In 1909 Mr. and Mrs. Stark retired from active farming and moved into Salem, SD which has since been the lady's home. Her husband died in 1924, and she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mary, in 1933, and a son, Willard, in 1941. Mrs. Stark had been a member of the Methodist church for 46 years and was a sincere, devout Christian woman. Although she outlived practically all of her former friends and neighbors she gained new ones from the people of her children's generation, and was a highly respected and esteemed old lady. She is survived by two sons, James of Salem, SD; and Claude of South Shore, SD; five daughters, Mrs. Julia Green of Mitchell, SD; Mrs. Nellie Herting, Mrs. Claire Gapp and Mrs. Ethel Arnold, all of Salem, SD; and Mrs. Nina Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; 39 grandchildren; 68 great grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. Out of town relatives and friends who were here for the funeral services included Mr. and Mrs. Elnor Herting of Bryant, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Gapp, Mrs. Francis Hershley of Montrose, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Green and son Vyron, all of Mitchell, SD; Lieutenant and Mrs. Lemme Herting, and family of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Stark of South Shore, SD; Mrs. Nina Green of Mitchell, SD; Mrs. Nina Miller, Sioux Falls, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haegy of Sioux Falls; SD; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Janisch of Canistota, SD.
