She was converted and joined the Mennonite Church in her early teens and remained faithful to her Lord and the Church through her entire life. She was converted and joined the Mennonite Church in her early teens and remained faithful to her Lord and the Church through her entire life. She never married, but devoted her life completely to others. She loved children and spent from 1912 to 1923 taking care of the boys in the Orphans' Home at West Liberty, Ohio, and later spent a few years in the Children's Home in Kansas City, Kans. Since 1927 she has spent her time in caring for others in the homes of her brothers, sisters, nephews, and nieces who lived in Missouri, Kansas, California, and Oregon. She leaves 2 sisters and 2 brothers (Adeline Fenton and William E. Detweiler of Harper, Kans.; Leah Horst of Terra Bella, Calif.; and Jonas Dettwiler of Versailles, Mo.). Her parents, 2 sisters, and a brother preceded her. Thirty-three nieces and nephews remain who loved and respected their aunt Amanda. She always was so thoughtful of each one. She endured her suffering with much patience and cheerfulness. The little poem "The Home Land" meant much to her the last few days of her life. "Think - Of stepping on shore and finding it Heaven; Of taking hold of a hand and finding it God's hand; Of breathing a new air and finding it Celestial air; Of feeling invigorated and finding it immortality Of passing from storm and tempest to an unbroken calm; Of waking up - and finding it HOME!"
