She was married to Robert S. Cates in Missouri in 1869 and for nearly half a century these two have walked through life together. Read More	Amanda Virginia Cates, daughter of Levi and Dorothy Hess, was born in Virginia, September 5, 1851, and died in Kingman, Kansas, Nov. 2, 1918, aged 67 years, 1 month, and 28 days. She was married to Robert S. Cates in Missouri in 1869 and for nearly half a century these two have walked through life together. Two more years and their golden anniversary would have been theirs to celebrate. From Missouri they moved to Oregon where the three oldest boys were born, then to Kansas in 1878. They have lived in their present home for thirty-one years, having come to Kingman in 1886. To this husband whose loss is so great there goes out the deepest sympathy of this community. The days will be lonely for him, but the time of separation is short as we call shortness in these days of trouble and sorrow. The five sons who mourn the departure of a mother are Levi Spencer, Ogle Clare of Wichita, Robert Luther, Elton Ellis, Leonard Lock of Herrington, all of whom are here to follow their mother to her last resting place. She has five sisters and three brothers living. Those who are permitted to be here are Mrs. Flora Conley of Spivey; Mrs. Millie Messenger , Mrs. Ida Williams, and Charlie Hess of Cleveland; and Wm. O. Hess of Salt Lake. The others are John Hess of California; Mrs. Lizzie Travis of Ft. Scott, and Mrs. Kate Brown of Ottawa, Illinois. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. H.A. Pearce and the interment in the Cleveland cemetery.
