Victor E., son, b.Jan 1879, 21, b.KS, parents b.PA. * * * * * Friday Oct. 25, 1907 Brown County World: A mile or so west of Reserve on the main highway is a grand old home. There is a good roomy house well furnished and everything about suggests handiness. Neatness and cleanliness is at once perceived. All around are fruit and shade trees, grass and flowers. Nearby is a fine red barn, one of the best in the county. It is 40x60 feet in size, with a shed running the whole length, and there are many other buildings. This is the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Syster, with 440 acres of as fine tillable land as lays out of doors, surrounding it. Mr. Syster has been a big stock raiser in his time, and the big ranch is well fixed for that business, but he does not follow the business extensively now. He used to be a pushing farmer, too, but he has not farmed for 15 years. Mr. Syster rents out 160 acres of the farm, his son Victor works three 80's of it, and his brother John farms the odd 40 acres. Mr. Syster was born in the state of Pennsylvania in 1845, and married Miss Lavina Burger, Nov. 16, 1865. They have three children, Ara, who is married to James Stickle, Laura, who is married to B. M. Lichty, and Victor E., who is married to Miss Nellie Moore, and the parents are left alone. Mr. and Mrs. Syster came to Brown county 37 years ago, about five years after they were married. They were poor then, and settling on the spot where they now reside, in wealth and ease, they lived for a long time in a small two room house. With no companion but poverty, the young wife was terribly timorous and afraid, when her husband was compelled to go away to work to earn their bread, and would shut herself in that little cage and make it as secure as was possible from one long day to another. This was the picture of their start in the race of life together. How dark and dismal it appeared then, how bright and joyful now, transformed from a state of abject poverty to splendid heights of affluence. This sensible and jovial couple of good hearted, hospitable and liberal people, are taking it easy now. They have dismissed every care, task and annoyance, have nobody about, and are just living for one another, happy and alone, let the world outside do as it may. Of course, from habit, and for a little recreation Mr. Syster keeps a little stock about him yet to attend to. He has at this time 14 horses, 15 head of cattle and over 100 head of hogs. Mr. and Mrs. Syster are good old fashioned Pennsylvania people. They are ruddy, plump and healthy; jovial to an unusual degree, at their age; full of fun and jokes, and kind to those they meet. Theirs is a beautiful home without, a beautiful home within. Irreproachable in character, square and upright before the world, Mr. and Mrs. Syster are known and highly respected by friends, neighbors, relatives and all who chance to know them. * * * * * DEATHS. Syster—Emanuel Syster, an early settler of Brown county was found dead in his wagon Tuesday morning about 10 o'clock, at his farm near Reserve. He had been hauling cinders and was near his home when found. Heart disease was the cause of his death. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the home.
