BAXTER DIES, 25 YEARS POSTMASTER AT WEST FALMOUTH Amasa Whitney Baxter, for the past 25 years postmaster at West Falmouth, died Friday evening at Cape Cod hospital. He had been in ill health for about two years, but was taken suddenly ill Friday morning and removed to the hospital that noon. Mr. Baxter, long known as "Amasy" to all his friends, was appointed in 1915 by Posmaster General Albert S. Burleson, during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson. Since then he has been reappointed by four presidents. Harding, Coolidge, Hoover and Roosevelt. Every four years he has been reappointed without the formality of a civil service examination. When he became postmaster West Falmouth was a fourth class office. In 1923 it was changed to third class bringing it under a presidential appointment classification. Upon his appointment in 1915 Mr. Baxter took over the West Falmouth store of Arthur Underwood in which he had been clerk for about 22 years and kept the post office there until the present office was rebuilt in 1923. The new office had been the West Falmouth fire station, but was abandoned for a new station and rebuilt to house the post office. Mr. Baxter made half of the building his living quarters and the other half the post office. During the last 17 years the office has expanded several times, encroaching on his small accommodations. Sections of 50 boxes have been added to the office from time to time until there are now 203 mail boxes. In the days when "Amasy" was clerk in the country store owned by James E. Gifford and later by Arthur Underwood he used to be fond of fishing, but since he became postmaster his duties have given him little time for it. For years his only exercise has been riding his bicycle. He was seldom seen afoot and even though he took his meals at the home of Mrs. James A. Boyce only a few hundred yards from the post office he always rode that short distance. Mr. Baxter has lived in West Falmouth all his life and has been postmaster for nearly half that time. He has always been quiet, unassuming and accommodating, somewhat of an individualist with a Cape Cod sense of humor. He once said. '"Take this post office work and West Falmouth away and I wouldn't have much left." He worked in the post office up until the very day of his death. He was born November 23, 1874, the son of Joshua and Lucy M. (Whitney) Baxter. He attended West Falmouth grammar school as a boy and for three years attended Lawrence Academy, leaving in the fall of his senior year to go to work. He became clerk in the West Falmouth country store of James E. Gifford and stayed there for 22 years until he was appointed postmaster. He enrolled as a Democrat when he became of voting age and Wilson's administration brought him the postmastership. He lived alone for years and was a confirmed bachelor. His only social activity was membership in Marine Lodge. A.F. & A.M. He was master of the lodge in 1908 and 1909. His nearest relative is Mrs. Hezekiah Moody, West Falmouth, a niece. Miss Emma Whitney of New Bedford, his mother's half-sister, also survives. Funeral services were held at Oak Grove chapel Sunday at 2:30 P. M., with Masonic ritual. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
