Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church, where the rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Hoffman Schneider Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1640 Main St., is in charge of the arrangements. He was born on Nov. 9, 1917, on the family farm in New Vienna, son of Louis and Lena Pasker Hoeger. He received his education at St. Boniface School in New Vienna, graduating at the age of 16. After graduation, he enrolled in nursing school at Alexion Brothers Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., an affiliate of St. Louis University. He obtained his registered nurse degree, studying with the Jesuits and taking advanced coursework in the mental functions of logic, philosophy and psychiatry. After graduation in 1938, he moved to Chicago to work at the Alexion Brothers Hospital, where he served as a supervisor and directed the student nurses in his division. He also performed private-duty nursing. While in Chicago, he met his bride, Dorothy "Dottie" Cassier, of Lowden, Iowa, also a registered nurse. The couple married on May 21, 1941, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna. After their marriage, Ambrose and Dottie moved to Dubuque to work in the nursing field. Ambrose took a position as the head nurse in the men's division of St. Joseph's Sanitarium in Dubuque and taught psychiatric nursing courses at Mercy Hospital during World War II. In 1946, Ambrose and Dottie opened and operated the Prepared Food Shoppe on Eighth Street in Dubuque.In addition to operating as a delicatessen, the business did catering, and the couple managed 43 wholesale accounts, specializing in pies and bread. Ambrose was especially proud of his seven-grain bread recipe and of the fact that during certain times of the year, the business produced as many as 600 pies per day. During these years, Ambrose obtained his pilot's license and enjoying flying planes with other Dubuque area pilots. He and Dottie spent many hours flying to visit friends and family in various locations throughout the United States. After 33 years of business, the couple retired in 1979 and immediately became active volunteers in the early years of the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. As a rosarian, Ambrose was active in developing the rose garden, planting the first 86 roses and working diligently to expand and maintain the beauty of the gardens. The rose garden presently contains a plaque with his name inscribed as a tribute to his years of volunteer work, not only with the roses, but with all aspects of the arboretum. He spent many years as part of the American Rose Society and served as the Midwestern representative. After Dottie passed away in 2000, he became a volunteer in the area of elder care in Dubuque. He volunteered at the adult day care centers in Dubuque, providing assistance wherever needed. He treasured the friendships he developed and encouraged others to become involved in an area dear to his heart. Ambrose continued to volunteer until 2010. The Telegraph Herald featured Ambrose in an article as a volunteer in October 2006. He was quoted as saying, "I enjoy helping people. Really, that's all I've done all my life." Numerous individuals and organizations in the Dubuque area have been beneficiaries of his and Dottie's generous and compassionate nature. One of Ambrose's biggest challenges in life was diabetes. Being diagnosed with the disease in his early 20s, he successfully managed his diet and his insulin for more than 70 years. He always told people that it was "knowing what to do and actually doing it" that caused him to be able to live independently all these years and to keep his mind sharp until the very end. A compassionate and faith-filled individual, Ambrose volunteered for many years with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Legion of Mary. He was on the board of St. Vincent de Paul at the time of the purchase of the current building on Iowa Street in Dubuque. He spoke of visiting homes of poor families in Dubuque to offer financial assistance and to provide for their needs. He was an active parishioner at the Cathedral Parish, serving as an eucharistic minister for many years. He attended daily Mass whenever possible and possessed a true devotion to the rosary. He and Dottie were among the first members of the Power of Prayer Inc., and he remained active for several years after her death. Those individuals left to honor his memory who were especially close to him are John and Wendy Ondande and family of Oak Park, Ill.; and his nephews, David (Hedy) Witte, of Fredericksburg, Va., and James E. Onsager, of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years, Dottie; an infant son and daughter; his parents; brothers, Sylvester and Clarence; and a sister, Clara Hoeger Hermsen.
