A Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2012, at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Maryville, Missouri, with burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Maryville. Visitation will be held Monday from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Price Funeral Home is in charge of professional arrangements in Missouri. Born April 17, 1924, in Clyde, Missouri, Ambrose E. "Spec" Wilmes was the son of John and Magdalene (Henkels) Wilmes. He received his education in Maryville, Missouri, graduating from high school in 1942. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps where he earned the rank of Sergeant. On April 9, 1947, Spec was united in marriage to Lois Tuck in Conception Junction, Missouri. The couple was blessed with four sons, David, Mark, Bill, and Jeffrey. Spec worked as a telegraph operator, also known as a depot agent, for Illinois Central Railroad from 1946-67. He then made his home in Ida Grove where he owned and operated the Gambles Hardware Store from 1967-77, and later purchased the Baxter Hotel. Spec was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, and also was a member of the Ida Grove Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed bowling, watching baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Twins, fishing, playing cards and horseshoes, taking walks, and playing the harmonica. Survivors include three sons, David (Connie) Wilmes of St. Paul, MN, Mark (Kim) Wilmes of Calmar, and Bill (Garnet) Wilmes of Loveland, CO; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lois in 1988; a son, Jeffrey; four brothers, Johnny, Marion, Ernie, and Ally Wilmes; and two sisters, Patricia O'Donnell and Viola Yates.
