Back to stanch old Southern stock does Ambrose Reese Johnson, successful agriculturist of Liscomb township, Marshall county, trace his lineage, and that in his character abide those sterling qualities which have ever marked the true type of the natives of the old Tar state is manifest when we come to consider the more salient points in his life history, which has been marked by consecutive industry and invincible spirit, eventuating in his securing a high place in the confidence and esteem of his fellow men. Mr. Johnson was born in North Carolina, July 14, 1848, and he is the son of James and Jemima (Reese) Johnson, both natives of Yadkin county, North Carolina. There they grew to maturity, received their education in the public schools and were married, and from there they emigrated to Morgan county, Indiana, in 1866, and in 1870 moved on West, locating in Hardin county, Iowa, where they rented land for four years. In 1874 they came to Marshall county and settled on one hundred and sixty acres which they made a good farm of, and the father spent his last days retired in Liscomb, where he died June 9, 1889, the mother having died on the farm July 11, 1887. They were the parents of nine children, of whom six are living. He was a Whig in politics and later a Democrat. He and his wife were Baptists in belief. Ambrose R. Johnson was reared on the farm and received his education in the public schools of North Carolina and Indiana. He came to Iowa with his parents forty years ago and he has been a resident here since, during which time he has lived to see the county develop from a wild prairie to one of the leading sections of the Mississippi valley, and he has played no inconspicuous part in its development. He lived on the old homestead, which consists of one hundred and sixty acres, which he farmed successfully until 1887 when he moved to Liscomb, where he is now living retired. Politically, Mr. Johnson is a Republican, and a Prohibitionist in sentiment; he has never been an aspirant for office. He and his family were members of the Friends church for years, and they now belong to the Christian church at Liscomb. Mr. Johnson was married on December 12, 1878, to Elmina McCollum, who was born in Morgan county, Indiana, September 3, 1854. She is the daughter of Joseph M. and Matilda (Weesner) McCollum, both born in North Carolina. Mrs. McCollum came to Morgan county, Indiana, with her parents, and Mr. McCollum was twenty-one years old when he moved there. Not long afterwards they were married. Nine children were born to them, of whom five are living. Mr. McCollum devoted his life to farming, and politically he was a Republican, but became a Prohibitionist before his death. He was a life-long member of the Friends church, of which his wife and ancestors on both sides were also members. His death occurred in July, 1907; his widow survives him, being now eighty-five years of age. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, namely: Eva L., born October 9, 1879, graduated from the high school at Liscomb at the head of her class; she is the wife of Edison F. Hawk, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and they have one son, Harold Ambrose. Ida May, second daughter of the subject, was born May 2, 1887; she also graduated at the head of her class in the Liscomb high school, and is now the wife of James Homer Weatherly, of Liscomb, and they have one child, Howard Everet, born January 20, 1911. Mr. Weatherly is the owner of one hundred and sixty acres of land in South Dakota.
