Description	:	Amelia C Paluck was born on October 31, 1909, in Billings County, ND, the second child of Stephen "Steve" Paluch and Helen K Kolodjeczyk. Her parents were Galician-born (western Ukrainian) but spoke Polish and had immigrated in 1906. They had a homestead about 8 miles east of Belfield, ND, near Fryburg, with a few tiny sod buildings on the land: the home, a barn, and a blacksmith shop. The house was only 14'x32'x9'. Read More	Amelia C Paluck was born on October 31, 1909, in Billings County, ND, the second child of Stephen "Steve" Paluch and Helen K Kolodjeczyk. Her parents were Galician-born (western Ukrainian) but spoke Polish and had immigrated in 1906. They had a homestead about 8 miles east of Belfield, ND, near Fryburg, with a few tiny sod buildings on the land: the home, a barn, and a blacksmith shop. The house was only 14'x32'x9'. They were very successful farmers and in 1912, Steve was given the land by the Department of the Interior. On the side, Steve worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad; Helen remained a housewife. However, the hard labor took a toll on Steve's health, and in late 1918, he fell victim to the Spanish Bird Flu pandemic. Helen was also infected but survived, and in 1921, she remarried to Joseph Frank Kropelnicki. This union gave Amelia another 2 half-brothers and 1 half-sister. Meanwhile, Amelia attended school north of Belfield, walking there every day, since automobiles were not yet widespread in the area and the family had no horses. She completed up to 7th grade. Amelia married Frank Makowski on January 20, 1931, in ND, and from then on was a housewife. Frank was an Army veteran and had immigrated from Austria in 1908. In 1940, Frank was farming on rented land near Fryburg, ND, and living there with his family. By the 1950s, her family had moved to Gorham, ND; later, they would move back to Belfield and Frank would work several odd jobs. Frank passed away in 1978. Amelia spent her last few years in a nursing home in Dickinson, ND. She passed away there on October 21, 2001, at the age of 91; just 10 days before her 92nd birthday. She was buried on October 24, 2001, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church Cemetery, in a plot next to her husband.
