Feb 28, 1938 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. Amelia Wohlenberg, 81, who had lived in Carroll and vicinity for many years, died suddenly of a heart ailment at the home of her son, J.C. Wohlenberg, at 5:35 a.m. Sunday. Mrs. Wohlenberg had not been ill and her death was unexpected. Last week she had as light cold from which she had recovered and she had seemed to be in her usual good health. The body was taken from the Huffman Funeral Home at 4:30 Monday afternoon to the J.C. Wohlenberg home, where it will rest until these services. Short rites at the Wohlenberg home at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon will be followed by final services at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 2 o'clock. The Rev. A.O. Bleeke will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot in the Carroll cemetery and pallbearers will be six nephews, Gus Dreeszen, Harry Dreeszen, Ed Onken, L.M. Rohrbeck, L.C. Dreesen, and William T. Otto. Mrs Wohlenberg was born Amelia Dreeszen, daughter of Mr & Mrs C.R. Dreeszen in Meldorf near Hamburg, Germany, May 16, 1853. When she was about 16 years old she came with her parents to West Liberty, Iowa where they lived for a short time before they moved to Sheridan township, Carroll county where her parents were pioneer residents. She attended school in Germany and also eastern Iowa. In 1874 she became the bride of Herman Wohlenberg at Davenport, Iowa. They lived in Davenport a few years before coming to Carroll. Later they bought and settled on a farm, which is known as their old homestead, in Jasper township. They purchased this farm in 1891. After living on it for a number of years, they moved to a Grant township farm in order to live near their son, Fred W. Wohlenberg. They were residing in Grant township when Mr. Wohlenberg died Nov. 11, 1912. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Wohlenberg made her home with her children, spending the greater part of the time with her son, J.C. Wohlenberg, and family in Carroll. In the summers she visited her children living in the northern part of the state. Mrs. Wohlenberg was reared in the Lutheran faith and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Carroll. She took a great interest in church affairs and was an active member of the Ladies Aid Society. Survivors include four children: John C. Wohlenberg and Fred W. Wohlenberg of Carroll; Mrs. Frank Winter, (Anna C.) of Carpenter, Iowa; and Mrs. E.H. Loeschen (Elsie) of Spirit Lake; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two brothers, Henry Dreeszen of Lake City; and G.A. Dreeszen of Newport, Ore. She was one of a family of ten children, the only survivors of whom are the two brothers above named. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Alvina, who died in early childhood. Mrs. Frank Winter and son, Lloyd, of Carpenter, and Mrs. E.H. Loeschen arrived here Sunday night.
