Description	:	Amelia Lapp earned recognition when she made and decorated possibly the largest birthday cake in South Dakota. It happened back when the famous Fischer quintuplets were born and Aberdeen was holding a big parade in celebration. Alma was working for Burckhard's Bakery in Aberdeen at the time and the bakery had to produce a huge cake for a parade float. Because of much handling and the travel up and down streets, it was necessary to make the many tiers of cardboard. It took Amelia "buckets of frosting and hours of work" to decorate the cake, with each tier bearing one of the quint's names. Amelia had years of experience working in bakeries. She had worked at the Northside Bakery in Aberdeen for 12 years before going to work at Burckhard's, where she worked another 12 years before the heavy lifting of dough caused problems with her arm and the doctor told her she would have to quit work if she wanted it to get better. Her husband, John Lapp had died earlier in Aberdeen and when Amelia quit the bakery work, she moved to Lemmon to work in a bakery before moving to Arizona where she lived for 14 years. She returned to Roscoe to care for an ailing sister. In March of 1998 she moved to Selby, then to Prairie Sunset Assisted Living in Mobridge. After treatment for a stroke, she entered the Good Samaritan Center in Selby in October of 2002. When she was interviewed as a Cook of the Week for the Tribune at age 94 she said, "I spend my days eating, sleeping, walking and sitting...and my memory is not so good anymore." While her days at the center sounded basic, she still found time to play cards and take part in activities. But her time ran out. Amelia died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby at the age of 95. She was born in Akaska on Aug. 5, 1910, one of the 12 children of Samuel and Christina (Schanzenbach) Heier. She grew up on their farm near the town that at that time had two grocery stores and a variety of other businesses. School wasn't considered necessary for girls because it was assumed they would work until married and would take over their own homes. So it was that Amelia left school after the eighth grade. She had learned to cook and bake as a young girl and when she was 16 she worked for other families. Dances were held in schoolhouses at the time (the barns were for animals) and it was at a dance that Amelia met John Lapp. More dances and romance followed and they were married in Lowry on Jan. 14, 1930. She and John farmed for 17 years near Akaska until the farm was sold and they moved to Aberdeen and she went to work at Northside Bakery. While in Roscoe she was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and the Roscoe Senior Citizens. After moving to Selby, she joined St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crafts and crocheting and was always a prolific cake maker, and especially proud of that huge ceremonial cake she made for the famous quints. Survivors are one brother, Alvin Heier of Gettysburg, and one grandson, Donald Lapp, a daughter-in-law Alice Lapp and a great-granddaughter Brienna Lapp, all of Phoenix, Ariz. Her husband John, who died March 22, 1965, her son Clinton, six brothers, four sisters and her parents preceded her in death. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. Mobridge Tribune May 3, 2006
