Military Rites Held at Alton for Miss Amelia Scroeder Miss Amelia Schroeder, a resident of Alton for nearly 70 years, died at the Veterans Adm. Hospital in Des Moines Saturday, Sept. 29, at the age of 78 years from cancer of the lung. She had been in the hospital for two months. Miss Schroeder, or "Millie" as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, was born at Bellevue, Iowa on March 21, 1884. She came to Alton with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Schroeder, in 1893. She graduated from St. Anthony Hospital school of nursing at Carroll and became a registered nurse. She enlisted as an Army nurse during World War I and served at Camp Dodge in Des Moines and later at the Maywood Veterans Hospital, Chicago. Upon retiring from her profession in 1947, she returned to the family home in Alton where she lived with her brother John and sister Nell. At various times the three had charge of nieces who lived with them and attended St. Mary's school here, including Cecelia Koob, now Mrs. Arnold Kelly of Jefferson, who came here from Canada after the death of her mother and attended both grade and high school; Mary and Verla Gates, now Mrs. L. L. Breeding and Mrs. Russell Boyle, both of Des Moines, stayed with their uncle and aunts for a time and attended school; so did a great nephew, Dick Fritz. All came for the rosary and funeral service, along with Miss Schroeder's only surviving sister, Mrs. Clara Gates of Des Moines. The funeral with military tribute by Floyd Post, American Legion, of which Miss Schroeder was a member, was at St. Mary's Catholic Church Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Rosary was recited at the residence Tuesday evening. Msgr. Reising officiated at the service Wednesday, and burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Gates; and a number of nieces and nephews, children of the brothers and sisters who preceded her in death, including Anne (Mrs. Frank Koob), Frank, John, Peter, Nell, and Cecelia. Miss Schroeder was a member of St. Mary's Rosary Society and the Mission Club, also one of the local card clubs. She was devoted to her family, a loyal friend, and will be greatly missed in Alton, her home for so many years.
