Obit: Died- At the home of his daughter Mrs D K Staples in Neligh at 4am, Feb 25, 1895, after an illness of one week, Ami Smith in his 85th year. Ami Smith was born in Genesee county, NY, Aug 27, 1810. Sept 3, 1834, he married Mary Boyd of Livingston county in the same state. Their married life was spent in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota from which they removed from to arrive in Neligh in 1888 to live with their daughter Mrs D K Staples. They had celebrated their golden anniversary at their home in High Forest, Minnesota, Sept 3, 1884. Mrs Smith died in Neligh about 3 yrs ago as her husband deeply felt the loss of this loved companion of over 50 yrs. Though always cheerful, he walked among us in loneliness, waiting in patience for his final summons. He had been a member of the Congregational church since early manhood. Of their six children, only 3 survive, Mrs Noah Staples of Stewartville, Minn, Mrs D K Staples, and Mr G A Smith of Neligh. The deceased was confined to bed only a week, but had been gradually failing all winter, being afflicted with kidney disease, and passed away at 4 o'clock on the morning of Feb 25. The daughter from Minnesota is expected today, and the funeral is put off till 10am tomorrow (Thursday). We owe it to ourselves to make more than passing mention of the death of Father Smith. A life like his needs no praise; but not to praise him would be a wrong to ourselves. His life among us was a benediction; and now , having gone, his memory remains a benediction. His character might as well be a standard for the best of us, so simple and transparent, so good spirited and unaffected. His intelligence is equally worthy of emulation. He always knew what he was about, and attended to any business he had in hand as well and as quickly as younger men. And it is a comfort that he retained the use of his faculties, bright and clear up to the last. His place in community and church is vacant and must remain so. No one can fill it, and we do not want it filled; we wish to hold and cherish his place as a sacred memory.
