Hoffert ( April 07, 1914 - June 30, 2013 ). Amos A. Hoffert was born April 7, 1914, to Henry and Katie (Horner) Hoffert at Moorefield, Nebraska and passed away June 30, 2013, at Caring Acres Nursing Home in Anita, Iowa. Amos grew up in southeast Nebraska. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior in September 1924 while attending evangelistic services being held at Bethel Church of the Brethren, Carleton, Nebraska. Amos graduated from Carleton High School in 1931. His parents and grandparents were all farmers, and Amos was always “close to the soil.” Amos was a hired hand for several farmers, even traveling west to work during the Great Depression. He worked on his uncle’s wheat farm in Wyoming, picked plums and apples in Idaho, and returned to Nebraska. When work became scarce in his home area, Amos came to Iowa where he worked for a cattle and grain farmer east of Hamlin, Iowa. He married Velma Mae Shoesmith May 25, 1941, and they had two children, Nadine and Myron. Amos, Velma, and family lived on a farm east of Exira in Audubon Township from March 1, 1946, until Velma passed away in September of 1969. Amos married Marilyn Lantz May 8, 1970. They lived in Anita, Iowa, until moving to Allen House in Atlantic, Iowa, October 1, 2000. Marilyn passed away July 7, 2003. After having lived at Allen House for almost eleven years Amos moved to Caring Acres Nursing Home in Anita in February 2012, because he needed more care. He was always thankful for his Christian heritage and the blessings of the Lord and the Lord’s protective care over the years. He taught the teens in Sunday School and was active in many other ways in his Church for as long as he was able. He enjoyed traveling around the United States. Amos especially loved riding his motorcycles (his 1949 Harley Davidson being his favorite), traveling to California, Sturgis, South Dakota, Louisiana and Yellowstone National Park by that means. He was preceded in death by his wives, Velma and Marilyn; his older sister, Ruth Hoffert Dowdy; and his brothers, John and Joe Hoffert. There are 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren for whom Amos was “Grandpa.” The visitation, lunch and funeral will all be held Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Brayton, Iowa, with the schedule as follows: Visitation from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; lunch next from 12:00 - 1:15 p.m.; funeral beginning at 1:30 p.m.; and the burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery (across from Bowman’s Chapel) following the funeral service.
