Mr. Bowman, who was 64, was the owner of the plant, and president of the Eastern Grain Growers Association. The Chewsville resident died at 8:45 a.m. yesterday of pneumonia that resulted from the accident last Tuesday. Mr. Bowman was attempting to fix a clogged valve when the accident occurred. A jet of ammonia gas knocked him and a helper, John Winters, Smithsburg, through a door into the next room. Mr. Winters is still confined to the Washington County Hospital. A native of Leitersburg, Mr. Bowman was the son of George H. and Ida V. (Warble) Bowman. He had lived in Leitersburg for 40 years. After attending schools in that area, he went to Columbia College in Hagerstown. Mr. Bowman entered business wile still in his teens, when he assumed operation of a flour mil in Leitersburg. He had been president of the Eastern Grain Growers Associated for 30 years, and was active in coordinating the work of cooperatives in this vicinity. In 1947 he had built the Millbrook Farm Locker Plant, where the accident occurred. Mr. Bowman was also well known for his interest in church, fraternal and civic affairs. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Greesburg, the Young Men's Brotherhood, and the Men's Bible Class. He also served as a teacher of the Friendship Sisters Sunday School Class at the Smithsburg Methodist Church. For three years, he was tiler for Salem Lodge No. 196, A.F. and A.M., Smithsburg. He also belonged to Ithiel Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, St. Bernard Commandery No. Nine, Knights Templar and Ali Ghan Temple of the Shrine. Surviving are his wife, Nora (Bachtell) Bowman; daughters, Mrs. William V. Niemyer, Hagerstown, Route Five; Mrs. Elmer R. Aldrige, Benevola; Mrs. Willard L. Landers, Chewsville; brothers Floyd, Boonsboro; Earl, Smithsburg; Samuel, Pittsburgh; sisters, Mrs. Bessie Myers, Hagerstown; Mrs. Elmer Newcomer, Mrs. Virgie Swope, Washington; Mrs. Charles Pond, Boonsboro; and four grandchildren. Friends may call at the Suter Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The body will be taken to Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburt, at noon Wednesday, where it will lie in state until the service is held at 2 p.m. by Rev. James G Horn, assisted by R.S. Ernst, pastor of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church, Chambersburg. St. Bernard Commandery will also conduct services.
