The alarm that the British were marching on Concord, MA, was received in Methuen about sunrise on that fateful morning of 19 April 1775. Capt. In reaching Bedford they learned the British were in retreat, so they altered their course to pursue them, but saw only the wounded and dying soldiers and burning houses and farms. When they reached what is now Arlington, MA, they camped for the night and marched on to Cambridge the following day. Amos Harriman also served with the Methuen Minutemen at the Battle of Bunker Hill on 17 June 1775. It is possible that Amos also served in Capt. Josiah Davis' Company, Col. Joseph L. Prime's York County (ME) Regiment in 1780. Amos moved to the Fryeburg, ME, area and married Nancy sometime between 1776 and 1780. Their first five children were born in Maine between 1779 and 1785. They settled at Chatham Center by 1789, on land of Loyalist Thomas McDonough. Children: Amos (Sarah Charles), Moses (Sarah Proctor), Betsy (John Nute), Mary (John Chandler) Robert (Belinda Lumis), Charles (Betsy Burbank), Dorcas (Elijah Philips), Susanna (Thomas Haley), John Church (Mary Knox), Isabella (Joseph Hazeltine), James (Clarissa Hazeltine).
