Amos was born December 21, 1937, near Hope in Bartholomew County, Indiana, shortly after his family moved there from Sullivan County, Tennessee. Amos was born December 21, 1937, near Hope in Bartholomew County, Indiana, shortly after his family moved there from Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was the sixth child in the family of nine children of Airy Newell Leonard and Burnice B. (Millsap) Leonard. Late in the 1940's, Amos's family moved to a farm near McCune, Kansas, when Amos was in the 6th grade. He graduated in 1955 from McCune Rural High School. He attended Pittsburg State University for two years after which he became a machinist for Boeing Aircraft at Wichita. He then worked for ACME Brass Works for about three years in Kansas City, Missouri. From 1960 to 1962, he served in Frankfort, Germany in Army Intelligence (H&S Btry 1st Msl Bn 32d Arty) as the war room clerk for the United States, and NATO obtaining the rank of Spec4. Upon returning home to McCune, he began dating his future wife, Sharon E. Huff, daughter of Paul and Margaret (Bowin) Huff. They were married at the Osage Church of the Brethren on July 25, 1964. She survives at the home. Like his brothers and his father, Amos became a master carpenter. Although he did some commercial work, his interest was in building houses. He was a housing contractor for over 30 years. His sense of design and his talent for his craft stand as lasting tributes to him. Amos was a member of the Osage Church of the Brethren. In his active days he served on several committees and boards, was a Sunday School Teacher and Youth group leader. He was a lifetime member of the American Polled Hereford Association. Other survivors are their son, James David Leonard, and their three grandsons: Cody James Leonard, Camden James Leonard and Nolan Cooper Leonard; two sisters, Thelma A. Barr and her husband, Kenneth of Independence, MO; Elvalee (Lee) Winburn and her husband, Richard of Weston, MO; two brothers, David N. Leonard and his wife, Sandy of Oak Grove, MO; and Rufus A. Leonard and his wife, Pat of Bloomfield, NM. In addition he is survived by in-laws and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by one brother, Audery L. Leonard; three sisters: Martha Jane (Janie) Hiller, Margaret M. (Brownie) Hartman, and W. Lucille Romig. A service for Amos will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 2, 2018, at the Osage Church of the Brethren, McCune, KS, with the Reverend Robert Simonsick officiating and Reverend Darrell Barr assisting. Burial will follow in the Osage Brethren Cemetery near the church, where a flag folding ceremony will be provided by the Kansas Military Funeral Honors Team. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Brenner Mortuary. Friends may call at the funeral home to sign the register book after 12:00 p.m., Saturday. The family suggests memorials to the Osage Church of the Brethren and/or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research and/or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St, Pittsburg, KS 66762. Friends may leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary.
