It all came out in the courts one day when one of his wives took him to court for child support. Elizabeth, my maternal great grandmother, happened to see the announcement in the newspaper and showed up in court to testify that she was married to him and they had 9 children, 7 of whom were still living at that time. Later on, yet another woman learned of the court appearances and came forth. In my research, later on, I also found a 4th person he was married to in an adjacent state! We don't know if there were any more, but these can be documented. Amos Riley Lee, my maternal great grandfather has used many different names and forms of his own name to hide the fact. Some of these names are: A Riley Lee A Riley Riley Lee Riley R Lee His son, my maternal grandfather, Raymond E Lee was also jailed for bigamy and assumed different names. It used to irritate me to no end that my grandmother said, "When I divorced your grandfather, I divorced all memory of him". If only she had told us the reason why, we would have understood. In those days, it was not only a great embarrassment to be caught in this kind of situation, but looked upon as much worse than it is in today's world. It had to have been the greatest pain my grandmother and my great grandmother could have endured.
