Wakarusa Tribune 23 Jan 1930 *********** SPECIAL FROM ZION The hand of death touched out community the past week and took from our midst one of the pioneer settlers of Zion. Amos Smeltzer passed away Wednesday of last week at his farm, which had been his home for over thirty years. The entire community was shocked and saddened as the news flashed over the telephone wires that Grandpa Smeltzer was gone. Mr Smeltzer had been in ill health for the past two years, but on Wednesday morning, feeling as well as usual, had gotten up and was dressing when a heart attack caused him to fail. He managed to get up, but failing again he injured his hip. He then called his wife, who quickly called members of the family to assist in getting him in bed. The doctor was called and the patient seemed to be resting easily, but the end came about one fifteen that afternoon. In passing of Mr Smeltzer, the family has lost a kind and loving husband and a wonderful father. The community has lost a splendid friend. Grandpa Smeltzer was a man with a very quiet and unassuming disposition, honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellowmen, jovial and pleasant at all times. He will be long remembered by all who came in contact with him HIS LIFE Amos Smeltzer was born on Sept 29, 1858 and passed away January 15, 1930, aged 71 years, 3 months and 17 days. His early life was spent at his birth place in Elkhart County, Indiana, near the town of Nappanee. On January 17, 1884, he was united in marriage to Eva Miller and to this union was born nine children. In the year 1896 Mr and Mrs Smeltzer and children came to North Dakota and shortly after coming here he fled on the homestead six miles west of Cando and this has been their home since. Mr Smeltzer was for many years connected with the township and school boards and was also a faithful member of the Church of the Brethren. Those surviving in the immediate family are his widow and six children. Jesse of Sacramento, Calif; Wilburn of Walnut Creek, Calif; Mrs Zora Stong, of Oakland, Calif; Dr Merril of Detroit, Mich, and Willard and Elmer, both residing here. Three children preceded their father in death. Merril was the only one of the children who was able to be here from a distance. Funeral services were held on Sunday at 12 o'clock, at the Zion church. Rev J D Kesler presided and used for his text for the sermon this assage of the scripture, "Blesses are the dead which die in the Lord." Interment was made in the Zion cemetery.
