September’s honoree will be Army Air Force Major Andrew D. McIntosh, Jr. who was born in Malden, Massachusetts on August 27, 1908. His family moved to Watertown, where he attended the Woodruff School and graduated from The Taft School. His father was a former dean of The Taft School. The Major attended Yale University where he majored in history and graduated in 1931 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He joined the New York State Guard on January 23, 1941 and remained in the guard until June 1942, when he entered the United States Army Air Force with the rank of Second Lieutenant. He attended Flexible Gunnery School and Combat Gunnery Officer School at bases in Alabama and Florida. He was assigned as a unit officer and instructor in the 2136th Aerial Gunnery Instruction Group, after which he was assigned to the 453rd Bombardment Group (H) 732nd Squadron as Gunnery Officer. His squadron was then shipped to England and he subsequently participated in eight B-24 bomber combat missions in 12 days. For his service he was awarded the Air Medal, the European, African and Middle East Campaign Medal with two battle stars, the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged with the rank of Captain on May 10, 1946. He then joined the Air Force Reserve until September 18, 1956. Following his graduation from Yale he worked for the New York Telephone company; after discharge from the Army Air Force in 1946 he joined the Southern New England Telephone company where he served in management capacities in the Waterbury, New Haven, Norwalk and New London offices. He served two terms in the Torrington office, and it was in the last term from which he retired on September 1, 1973 after completing 42 years in the telephone communications industry. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bantam, the Sanctum in Litchfield, the Squadron “A” Association of New York City, a member of the Evaluation committee of the Volunteer Services for the Blind and Handicapped and a member of Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 American Legion of Bantam. He was married to the former Jennie Clarke, who predeceased him. He died December 6, 1998 at his home and is buried in the Bantam Cemetery. Two nephews, Carrington Beach Day of Saginaw, Michigan and Frederick Tallmadge Day of Montreal, Canada, survive him. Contributor: Post44 Bantam (50707891)
