Description	:	Andrew F. Wares was the son of Moses Wares and Rebecca Allen; born in Berkshire, Vermont in 1810. He was a descendant of Robert Ware and Margaret Hunting, his great great great grandparents, both born in Suffolk, England in the late 1620's and who immigrated to the Colonies before 1645. Wares was the son of Moses Wares and Rebecca Allen; born in Berkshire, Vermont in 1810. In 1833, Rev. Moses Wares and his family were residents of Columbia township, Lorain county, Ohio. cit: History of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, published by D.W. Ensign & Co. 1879. Also residents of Columbia at that time were Bildad Belden and his family. cit: 1830 US Census, Columbia, Lorain, Ohio In 1835, Andrew married Susan Belden, the daughter of Bildad Belden, on the 8th of April, 6 days after her 15th birthday. The ceremony was performed in Elyria, the Lorain County seat, by Justice of the Peace, Edwin Byington of North Ridgeville. cit: 1835 Ohio, Lorain County Marriage Records Also in 1835, Moses Wares aligned with the First Baptist Church of Avon, Ohio, a few miles north of Elyria. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ About Susan: She was born on April 2, 1820 in Hancock, Berkshire, Massachusetts. Her parents were Bildad Belden of Berkshire, Massachusetts and his wife Polly of New York. Susan's siblings were Rachel Minerva Belden (1806 MA - 1880 OH); Daniel R. Belden (1810 MA - 1871 OH); and Mrs. Sarah (Belden) Baldwin (1815 MA - 1868 OH). Daniel and Sarah married their spouses in Elyria in September of 1835, 5 months after Susan's wedding. That year Bildad relocated to Grafton, Lorain, Ohio, which is about 7 miles from Elyria. (Susan Belden was the biography author's g-g grandmother; Bildad Belden, g-g-g grandfather.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Andrew F. Wares and Susan Belden's six children: • Martin VB Wares was born in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio, on Monday, February 2nd, 1835, and given up to Hannah Baxter on Sunday February 8th for permanent fostering. cit: received of Lorain County Recorder, result of 1991 family adoption record request, a document stating: "Martin Wares born Feb. 2 by Belden in Lorain County in 1835. The certificate was applied for on the 8th by mother Hannah Baxter in the town of Elyria, Lorain County." • Mary Jane Wares was born in Lorain County, Ohio about 1836, and was also given up to Mrs. Baxter. Mary married Francis "Frank" Bemis in Elyria, August 13, 1858 and made her home in Amherst where her 4 children were born. Both she and Martin are shown on the 1850 census residing with Hannah in Elyria: Martin at the estimated age of 14 (he was actually 15); and Mary at the estimated age of 12 (I believe she was actually 13). Please see census excerpt in photos at right. Her headstone dob, April 2, 1840 implies that she would have been age 10 at the time of the Baxter census. Hannah may not have informed her of the factual date of her birth. But it is a peculiar coincidence that her tombstone birth month and day is exactly the same as that of Susan Belden Wares. Unlike for Martin, there is no document yet found that links her directly to Andrew and Susan. We have the shared surname; the 1850 Census link to her assumed brother Martin; their mutual foster mother Hannah; and their residence in the same county at the same time as that of Andrew and Susan Wares. There is also the circumstance that no other 'Wares' lived in Lorain county from 1830 to 1840, according to FamilySearch inquiries. So why was Mary given up too? Her mother, Susan (Belden) Wares would have been 16. My theory is that Susan was pregnant with Mary 2 months after giving birth to Martin (it is physically possible). That may be why she married Andrew so soon after giving up her first child. She didn't have to marry right away. There was no pressure to do so after Hannah took baby Martin. The fact that Andrew was the son of a fire and brimstone Baptist minister would have had consequences for his father if the second child wasn't given up too. Pregnant Susan may have been secreted until after Mary's birth. Just my 2cents... we'll never know. • Byron H. Wares was born in either Rockport or Wakeman, Ohio about 1838. (He is recognized as the first legal child of his parents: Susan having been a respectable 18 years of age by that time.) He married Minerva Stevens Feb. 8, 1871 in Boone County, Illinois. They lived in Caledonia and had 2 children, Lottie and Henry Allen. • Fanny C. Wares was born in either Rockport or Wakeman, Ohio in 1841. She married Canadian born, Henry Jory. The couple lived in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois. • Moses B. Wares was born in either Rockport or Wakeman, Ohio in 1843. He enlisted for the Union on 18 June 1864 and was mustered into Company C, 142nd Infantry Regiment, Illinois, as a Private at age 21 and died from disease in a hospital at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on October 10, 1864. He was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. • Andrew P. Wares was born July 16, 1846 in either Rockport or Wakeman, Ohio. He was 1st married to Jennie Jory, sister of Fannie's husband, on December 23, 1869 in Boone County. By August of 1870, he is shown on the census without her. His 2nd marriage was Nov 28, 1872 to Sarah J. Roderick (1850 - 1940). Her Irish parents immigrated to New York 3 months before her birth on Staten Island and lived out their lives in Boone. The Wares lived in Garden Prairie, Boone Co, where Andrew was a blacksmith. In 1900, he and Sarah are shown on the census in Placer, California. He died in 1914 in Richmond, Illinois. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Andrew F. Wares' stepmother, Polina Wares died in Lorain County, Ohio in 1853 and was buried in South Amherst. I do not know when she married Moses. After her death, Andrew relocated with his family and his widower father to Russellville in Boone County, Illinois. Andrew's father, Moses, died in Illinois in 1857 at the age of 82. The 1860 US Federal census for Boone County lists them as A. F. Wires and Susan Wires. The 1865 Illinois State census for Boone County lists him as A. F. Wears. The US census of 1870 for Boone County shows Andrew and Susan Wares residing with sons Byron (at age 33) and Andrew P. (at age 24). His wife, Susan died in 1872. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On March 14, 1878 in Winnebago County, Illinois, Andrew F. Wares married Mrs. Mattie (Martha) Kendall (maiden name, Wetmore) and took her and her two children to Nebraska. Andrew F. age 70, born Vermont, is shown on the 1880 US census in Elm Grove, Antelope, Nebraska, with 2nd spouse 'Mattie' A. age 44, born 1836 New York; and her children, Arthur G. Kendall age 23, born 1857 Illinois, and Edith M. Kendall age 8, born 1872 Illinois. They had a farm near Neligh then moved to Plainview in 1882. In 1883, Andrew's stepdaughter Edith passed away at the age of 12 and was buried in Plainview Memorial Park Cemetery in plot 686. The initials of Andrew's wife appear on the Nebraska State Gazetteer, Business Directory and Farmers List for 1890-1891 ANTELOPE COUNTY: Wares M A, Plainview Andrew died in 1892 at the age of 82 years, 6 days according to his Vermont birth record. He was buried in Plainview Memorial Park Cemetery next to Edith in plot 687. In 1893, his stepson Arthur Kendall died and was buried beside Andrew in plot 688. A single monument memorializes both Andrew and Arthur. The marriage lasted less than 10 years. She married widower George Washington Barton in 1904. She was his third wife. Mattie died in Plainview in 1906 and was buried in Plainview Memorial Park Cemetery. Geo Barton died 2 years after Mattie. He has a monument in the same cemetery on plot 437.
