Allen, both 81 years old, pioneer residents of Leavenworth, celebrated the 60th anniversary, of their marriage recently. Mr. Allen said proudly, "We feel that fact might be of interest to some young married couples and that they may take courage and face the future with a determination to go on." Mr. Allen smiled to himself as he recalled when he first met his bride. I was marshal of the lodge at the time and had to conduct the candidates for initiation from office to office. I couldn't help but notice one of them was a mighty pretty little girl, and the following spring we were married. Mrs. Allen and I were both born of poor families. We have just passed the age of 81 and don't feel that work has hurt us much. I was born in Wisconsin on March 26, 1859. Mrs. Allen was born in Tennessee, March 27, 1859. We started out on the ground floor and have pioneered a great deal of our life. Married In 1880 during a spring blizzard in Hamilton county, Nebraska, we began our life together 14 miles from Aurora, where we lived until 1887. Then we settled on a homestead near Holyoke in Cheyenne county, Colorado, where we remained until 1895. We then moved to Longmont, Colorado, later to Boulder in that state, and in 1906 back to Northwestern Nebraska where we took one of the big 640 acre homesteads under the Kincaid law. I had already used a 160 acre claim, so filed on 480 acres near Bridgeport in Morrill County, Nebraska, 40 miles north of Sidney. In 1921 we came to the Wenatchee valley and have lived here since that time. Our home is at 224 Cascade street, Leavenworth, where visitors are always welcome. We experienced all the hardships of the pioneers, living in dugouts and crude cabins, during the blistering heat of summer and the severe cold of winter. We have used cornstalks, twisted bay and cow chips for fuel, but these are treasured experiences of our long life. They served to build- strong bodies and quick-thinking, resourceful minds, together with ability to do things for ourselves. We look forward confidently to the future, whatever that future may hold for us. We have raised a family of eight children, five of whom are still living, and we have seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
