Irwin, one of the old and highly respected citizens of this part of the state, passed away Sunday, March, 6, 1910, at the home of his son, W. S. Irwin, in this city. Death was caused by pneumonia, which his advanced age and weakened condition could not resist. Deceased was born in Licking county, Ohio, November 12, 1824, and moved westward, taking up his residence in Cass county, Iowa. He was married to Sarah Ann Mitchell, who died here nearly seven years ago, after the couple had lived together more than fifty years. Mr. Irwin enlisted in the Federal army during the Civil war, and marched with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea. At the battle of Savannah he was in the front ranks during the hottest fighting and had several bullets pass through his clothing, although he fortunately escaped without a wound. After the war he served as county judge of Cass county, Iowa, and later moved to Nebraska, coming to this state and settling in Casper in 1888. Ten years later he came to Thermopolis and has since lived here. Mr. Irwin was universally respected for his many good traits, and as a mark of esteem a large number of friends, a few old comrads of the war and the local militia attended the funeral at the Methodist church, Rev. Pierre N. Fredia conducting the services. he leaves seven children; W. S. and J. E. of Thermopolis; J.A., of Valentine, Neb.; J.R. of Casper; E.A., of Worland; Mrs. Mary E. Bryan of Casper, and Mrs S of Alberta Canada.
