Durland, one of the early financial and trust company organizers of north Nebraska and for many years one of the leading Norfolk community builders, died in his home at Seattle, Wash., Friday night, according to word received by Norfolk relatives Saturday afternoon. Mr. Durland is survived by the widow and one daughter, Mrs. B. F. Curtis of Seattle. Andrew Durland was 64 years old when he died in Seattle, Friday night. He has passed a life of great activity and to him much of the early advancement made by Norfolk and north Nebraska is due. He was at the head of the Durland Trust company and he moved to Seattle a number of years ago to be close to valuable timber interests which he owned. (second article) BURIAL SERVICE FOR A. J. Brome And Then Founded The Durland Trust Company of Which he Was President Until Death. Burial services over the ashes of the late Andrew J. Durland, who died recently in his home at Seattle, Wash., will be held on the Durland family plot in Prospect Hill cemetery at 5 o'clock Thursday evening June 9. Rev. John H. Andress, pastor of the First Congregational church, will officiate. Mrs. Durland arrived in Norfolk Sunday evening with her husband's ashes. She was met at Columbus by Norfolk relatives and the party motored to Norfolk from that place. Andrew J. Durland, for many years a leader in the upbuilding of this community, and up to the time of his death, president of the Durland Trust company of Norfolk, which he founded, was born in Orange county, New York, 1854. Came Here in 1881 He graduated with the class of '74 from Cornell university and afterward took up the study of law in Union College, which preceded Northwestern university in Chicago. He graduated there in 1877 and after practicing law at Middletown, N. Y., for several years, he started westward, locating in Norfolk in 1881. He formed a partnership with Harry C. Brome, the firm name being Brome and Durland. This law partnership continued until 1886, when Mr. Durland, having completed a thorough survey of the financial prospects of north Nebraska and South Dakota, founded the Durland Trust company and became president of that organization. For a year or more previous to founding that institution, he was loaning money of eastern relatives and friends to people in this part of the country. These financial transactions naturally developed into the formation of the Durland Trust company. In June of 1886, Mr. Durland was married to Miss Winnie Richards, daughter of Dr. G. B. Richards, who was practicing medicine in Norfolk at that time, and who built the Richards block. Helped Build Community From that year, Mr. Durland led the community in programs of civic improvement and progress. He platted that addition, which is known as "The Heights," and built many beautiful homes there. He was one of the first president's of the Norfolk Commercial club, a leader in the organization of the city's first Ad club, a leader in modern methods of city planning and was widely known as an authority on matters of city beautification. This he gained from taking the initiative in planting trees in the new platting of The Heights in 1889, New industries which came to Norfolk owed their coming and much of their success to the assistance of Mr. Durland. Moves to Seattle In 1907, Mr. Durland went to the western coast and made investigations into the timber lands of British Columbia and in 1909 he disposed of his residence on Ninth street and Pasewalk avenue and moved to Seattle, Wash., to live with the idea of marketing the timber which he had purchased. In the meantime, however, Mr. Durland never relinquished the interest he had in Norfolk and continued as the active president of the Durland Trust company of this city, making frequent trips here to look after his interests. During those visits, he discussed the progress being made by Norfolk and often displayed much pleasure at seeing the result of some of his early day activities in the community which he had first chosen as his permanent home. In Seattle, Mr. Durland's progressive spirit caught the attention of the wide-awake Seattle community builders. He was a member of the Arctoc club there and also the College club.
