Silva was a Confederate soldier during the war between the states, but who should come visiting, with birthday greetings, but his long-time neighbor and one-time enemy, Andrew Kiser, a Union soldier veteran. They had lived on adjoining farms, a quarter of a mile distance, sine 1905. Aljune is on the White Pass highway, east of Chehalis. Silva, born in Pocahontas county, West Virginia, fought for the southern cause against three of his brothers. A democrat, he long has been friendly with his republican neighbor, Kiser, who was born in Russell county, Virginia, 97 years ago come next August 5, and who offered to kick off the photographers hat to prove how spry he is. LEWIS COUNTY PIONEERS, PALS FOR YEARS, RECALL CIVIL WAR DAYS WHEN THEY FOUGHT ON OPPOSITE SIDES. By George B. Hayden News Tribune Staff Correspondent. Ajlune, April 18. - Living proof that a Civil war was fought is furnished by Robert D. Silva and Andrew Kiser. But they are also demonstrating that time, the great healer, can erase every vestige of hostility. While Mr. Silva fought with the confederates, and Mr. Kiser campaigned with General Sherman's Unionists, they have survived to become close friends and neighbors here at Ajlune. Many long talks about war days have taken place between them. No arguments that may have arisen, however, could interfere with their genuine friendship. His health is good, although his eyes, injured during the war, no longer permit him to read. SPRY AS EVER Bur Mr. Kiser, the youngster of the two, who won't be 97 until August, is about as spry and active as ever. "I can ship my weight in wild oats." he declared and followed this remark by offering to kick the photographer's hat off. Mr. Kiser was born in Russell county, Virginia, and enlisted int he 16th Kentucky infantry. Serving four years, all under Sherman, he took part int eh march to the sea. He escaped being wounded, however. On one occasion he saw Lincoln at Washington. Coming from Lebanon county, Virginia, Mr. Kiser arrived at Ajlune in 1905. Thee he lives with his son Sherman, who was named after the general. He still shows his independence though, by insisting on staying by himself in the old homestead in the rear of his son's house. FOUGHT AT BULL RUN Mr. Silva was born in what is now Pocahontas county, West Virginia. His chief excitement in the war was possibly the battle of Bull Run. He also escaped any wounds, bu he was once so close to Yankee gunfire that he was blinded for a week. He was never really unfriendly toward the North, as he had three younger brothers in the Union army, and says there was just one vote that he is proud of having cast. That was his vote for Lincoln. Longevity is a natural thing for Mr. Silva. He once visited his grandmother when she was 109, finding her cleaning house. She carried out a mattress, threw it up over the ling and lived to do such things until she was 114. Several others in his family lived more than 100 year. He also came to Ajlune in 1905 and now lives at the home of his son, R.D. Kiser" by Mildred Gail Kiser Rose, May 1980, page N-38 "Andrew Jackson Kiser was born August 5, 1841, in Russell County, Virginia. He was the son of James S. "Bell Clapper Jim" Kiser and Susan Sutherland Kiser. Andrew's grandparents (paternal) were Joseph and Mary P. "Polly" Childress Kiser. His great-grandparents were Joseph and Susannah Stacey Kiser. The following is a copied obituary of Andrew J. Kiser. Andrew Kiser was born Aug. 5, 1841, in Russell County, Virginia. He served three years and ten months in the Union Army of the Civil War of the United States. He served under General Sherman in the 16th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. One of the worst battles in which he fought was at Franklin, Tennessee. He went with this infantry to Washington, D.C. and sailed to the mouth of Cape Fear River, North Carolina, where they met General Sherman and his army. He was present when General Joseph E. Johnston, the Confederate General, surrendered to General Sherman at the close of the war. On one occasion, he marched three days and three nights without food. At the end of the war, he returned to Washington, D.C. where he received an honorable discharge. He went from there back to Russell County, Virginia, and soon afterwards married Melissa H. Selfe. To this union were born seven children, four boys and three girls ... Nancy Belle Stinson of Castlewood, Virginia; William Sherman Kiser of Ajlune; Thursie Caroline Rhodes of Buckley, Washington; James S.; Joseph W. and Samuel J. of Ajlune, Washington; Susie Virginia who preceded him in death. He lived in Russell County until 1905, then came to Lewis County, Washington, where he made his home ever since. His hope in eternal life became brighter toward the end. He was heard to speak out many times in praise to the Lord. He was always ready to help the needy. He passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 29, 1938, at 9:14 a.m. at the home of his son William Sherman Kiser of Ajlune, with whom he has been living. His four sons and one daughter and other relatives were at his bed side at the end. In parting, he leaves a host of friends." * The following is information pertaining to Andrew Jackson Kiser's service in the Army. He fought in the Union Army during the Civil War, joining the Union Army on March 30th, 1862, at Pikeville, Kentucky. On July 8, 1862, after training, he was mustered into service by Major Gault of the 16th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and assigned to Company "C" of that command. His organization was part of the Army of Ohio, under the command of Major General James M. Scofield. Official Union Army muster rolls, indicate that he served in this unit throughout the remainder of the Civil War. His service record shows that on September 23, 1863, just after the first battle of Chatanooga, Andrew was in Loudon, TN on the Little Tennessee River. He was in Louisville, KY in 1864 where he received a 30-day furlough from February 11 to March 11, 1864. On April 11, 1864, he received $30.43 money advanced for clothing with a notation that due the U.S. Army for arms or equipment $0.00 - Bounty due $100. The last muster roll shows him at Company Shops, NC for Mustering Out on July 15, 1865. All records indicate that Andrew was a private in the Army from enlistment to mustering out. Upon returning to VA after the Civil War, he married Melissa Hopkins Self on February 14, 1866. They were married at the bride's home by Rev. A. A. Kiser (recorded in Lebanon, Virginia). On August 16, 1870, Andrew, a farmer, & Melissa Kiser, ages 27 & 26, lived in Castle Woods Township, Russell Co, VA. Their land was valued at $400 & had personal wealth valued at $100. Their children were Nancy and William, ages 3 & 1. On June 11, 1880, Andrew J. & Malissa H. Kiser, ages 39 & 37, lived in Castlewood, Russell Co, VA. Their children were Nancey B., age 13; William S., 10; Thursie C., 9; James S., 6; Joseph W., 6; Joseph W., 5; Samuel J., 2; & Sushanor V, 2 months. Andrew supported them by farming. On June 8, 1900, Andrew J. & Malissie, ages 58 & 50, owned a farm in Castlewood, Russell Co, VA. They had been married 34 years. Two sons were living with them: Jas S. & Jos W., ages 26 & 25. On May 6,1910,** Melissa H. Kiser, age 69, was living in Sulpur Creek, Lewis Co, WA with her son, William S., age 40, and his wife, Mary J., 33, & their children: Tempy, age 14; Eula B., 9; Paula V, 7; William H.J., 5; & Daphne J., 2. William & Mary had been married 15 years; she had given birth to 6 children - 5 were living. William supported the family by farming. William's brother, Joseph W. Kiser, age 35, a single farm hand, was also living with them. The record indicated that Melissa had been married 45 years & had given birth to 7 children, but only 6 were living. Melissa & Andrew had a parting of the way of sorts. Andrew, age 68, was boarding with the Everett Stinson family who lived nearby. Everett, age 43, born in VA, owned and operated a saw mill.
