Smith, deceased, a venerable pioneer of Chehalis county, was a resident of Montesano at the time of his death, August 28, 1893. His life, covering a period of four-score years, was one of the most varied experience, and although his latter days were spent in the greatest physical pain, he, was able to live in the joys, of others and to ignore to a remarkable degree his own discomfort. His parents, Andrew and Peggy (Tilipah) Smith, removed from Rochester, New York, to the eastern part of the State, settling on the bank of the Hudson river; the father lost his life in the river in attempting to rescue a man from drowning. The mother returned with her family to Rochester, in 1822, and resided there until 1835. The subject of this notice was born at Brighton, Monroe county, New York, July 4, 1813, and remained with his mother until 1835, when he went to New York city, where he obtained employment as a painter for a year. Going to Lexington, Kentucky, he stopped there for a short time and then went to New Orleans, where he was stricken with yellow fever. For many months he was unable to travel, but as soon as his strength was recovered he came north, and located in Hamilton county, Ohio. He engaged in farming and followed this occupation until stricken with a serious illness which kept him confined to the hospital for nine months; when he was sufficiently strong he returned to his old home in Rochester, and thence went to Buffalo, New York, where he took passage, for Wisconsin. The vessel was wrecked on Lake Huron and had to be abandoned, but another was taken, and Milwaukee was, finally reached. In 1840 Mr. Smith took up a claim in the town of Summit, Waukesha county, Wisconsin, and two years later bold the property and removed further west to Dodge county, in the same State, where he opened a large farm, upon which he lived until his removal to the Pacific coast. He was married September 2, 1844, to Lucy A. Bartlett, a native of Maine, born in Bangor, in 1818; she died two years after her marriage, leaving two children who soon passed on into the great beyond. On the 20th of September, 1847, Mr. Smith was married to Christina Chalmers, who was born Scotland, March 25, 1830. It was during his residence in Wisconsin that Mr. Smith was ill of smallpox, and he had scarcely recovered from this attack when he had cholera. He was left with a broken constitution and with his eyesight totally gone. His vision was, however, retrained at the end of five years, and he was able to read without glasses up to his last year of life. Seeking a milder climate he came to Washington in 1859, via the isthmus of' Panama. He landed in San Francisco January 28th, and thence came to Olympia by water. Settling his family in Thurston county, he traveled over the western portion of Washington looking for good land for farming purposes. He finally homesteaded 160 acres in the Chehalis valley, and at the time of his death owned a tract of 600 acres, all of which he had purchased, excepting the homestead referred to. Half the farm is under cultivation, and the balance in grass. For more than thirty years he conducted a dairy business and raised large numbers of live stock. Mr. and Mrs. Smith raised a family of six children, all of whom survive and live in homes provided by their parents. They are: Mrs. Lucy A. Glenn, Robert, Andrew, Mrs. Emma J. Brewer, John, and Mrs. Elvira Hutchman. The father was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was held the highest esteem by the entire community, his widow having also been a devoted member of the same church for many years. The contributed liberally of their means to the building of many of the churches in Chehalis county, and bravely displayed their part in the labors attendant upon the development and settlement of a new country.--An Illustrated History of the State of Washington, p 654, 1894
