OBITUARY: Andrew John Eckhoff, son of Thomas John and Wilhelmina (Schurman) Eckhoff, was born on May 29, 1918 at Macon, Nebraska.He was one of four children. He was baptized on June 16, 1918 by Rev. Ludwig Kostbaum and confirmed on March 27, 1932 by Rev. Weber at the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church at Macon, Nebraska. He received his education at the Franklin High School in Franklin, Nebraska. Pete as he was known by his friends, spent the first twenty-three years of his life in Franklin, Nebraska. On August 10, 1941 he was united in marriage to Alberta Marie Oestmann at St. Matthew Church in Johnson, Nebraska. He was inducted into the Medical Corp attached to the 3rd Air Force on March 5, 1942. He spent three years in the Medical Corp until being transferred to the Infantry and was honorably discharged on January 28, 1946. After the service, Pete and Alberta made their home near Rohrs, Nebraska. He farmed for ten years and then went to work for Magnolia Metals in Auburn, Nebraska. Pete worked there for nineteen years and retired in 1983. He was a member of St. Matthew Church since 1941 and served on the church council for nine years, was an organizer for the 75th Anniversary Committee, the new Parsonage Committee, a member of the Auburn American Legion Post #23 and a former member of the V.F.W. Post #2635 of Auburn, NE. One of his favorite pastimes was taking care of his yard. He was very proud of the way his yard looked and would mow larger and larger areas every year. A self reliable man, he was very proficient at fixing things when they broke down. Since the fall of 1998, his health began declining. He passed away at his home on June 14, 1999 having reached the age of 81 years and 15 days. He was preceded in death by his parents ;infant son, Thomas John Eckhoff. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Alberta Eckhoff of Auburn, Ne.; son Steven Lee Eckhoff of Auburn, NE. sisters, Stilla Hall of Kearney, Nebraska, Mildred Fleer of Tacoma, Washington, Ann Carter of Norfolk, Nebraska; sister-in-law Opal Oestmann of Auburn, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
