Description	:	Andrew Joseph Utick, age 91, died peacefully on May 15, 2004 at his home, in the presence of family members. Andy was born on Sept. 12, 1912, to John and Elizabeth Hermina (Kubik) Savana Utick in East Helena, and lived there until 1925 when his father's death precipitated a move to Roslyn, Wash. Read More	Andrew Joseph Utick, age 91, died peacefully on May 15, 2004 at his home, in the presence of family members. Andy was born on Sept. 12, 1912, to John and Elizabeth Hermina (Kubik) Savana Utick in East Helena, and lived there until 1925 when his father's death precipitated a move to Roslyn, Wash. From there, the family of eight moved to Southern California, settling in Santa Ana. Andy played right guard on the football team at Santa Ana High School. His senior year, his team won every game and took the Southern California championship. From there, he and his brother, Frank, pursued various jobs, working at almost anything they could find to put cash in their pockets and food on their mother's table. In 1941, Andy traveled back to Montana, and renewed his acquaintance with a neighborhood friend, Violet Petek. They were married that fall, and moved to California shortly afterward, where their first two children, Andy ("Butch") and Robert ("Bob"), were born. During that time, Andy worked for Lockheed Aircraft. While on that job, he met and was photographed with Mrs. Winston Churchill, who was taking a tour of the factory. In 1946, the family moved back to Montana, where Andy worked at the smelter in East Helena. Shortly thereafter, he landed the position of manager of the Capitol Motel and Service Station, on the corner of 11th and Montana avenues. During this time in their life they were blessed with two more children, Peggy and John. In 1961, Andy and Violet were able to purchase the businesses and, shortly thereafter, they rebuilt the station. Violet's untimely death in 1972 rendered the continuation of the motel operation unfeasible, so it was moved and replaced with other properties. He continued to run the full-service station for 38 years. On 72nd birthday in 1984, he finally retired, to travel and oversee his various property developments. In 1975, Andy marked his 63rd birthday by taking his first parachute jump. It was a great jump, and even made the local papers. Andy was always an avid fisherman, and enjoyed taking his sons, son-in-law, and grandson on an annual fishing expedition to Alaska. The group returned each year with hundreds of pounds of halibut and salmon, and lots of tales to tell. He also enjoyed deep-sea fishing with his daughter, son-in-law and others, off the coast of Washington and also in the Gulf of Mexico. Because he was not fond of fish as a food, he gave away all the fish he caught, delighting many customers during the years when he ran the service station, and spreading joy to fish-lovers, friends and family alike, an example of his characteristic generosity, throughout his life. He also enjoyed a lifetime of hunting with family and friends. In his later years, he found special enjoyment in hunting with his son, granddaughter, and grandson and a special friend, Bill Bahny, by Broadus, and later on land he owned in the Helena valley. At the age of 91, his final hunting season in this world, he managed to fill his tags with one-shot kills, quite an accomplishment for anybody. His frequent visits to the home of his daughter, Peggy, in Jesup, Ga., resulted in many new friendships with Peggy's friends. He had the distinction of having his own fan club there, consisting of 16 women. They call themselves "Andy's Gems," in honor of Andy's love for diamonds. The Gems sponsored and participated in many exciting birthday surprises for Andy, including a cruise, a trip to the dog races in a stretch limousine, being kidnapped off his flight in Atlanta and taken to an Atlanta Braves game where the billboard announced the occasion, and a deep-sea fishing trip. People were always interested in how one man could handle all 16 "Gems." Obviously, they didn't know Andy! Andy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Violet; a son, John; a grandson, Christopher, and eight siblings, Mary Savana, Anna Savana (Mrs. William) Roth, Stephen Savana, Frank Savana, Mary Savana, Elizabeth Savana, Frank Utick, and Rosalia Utick (Mrs. Joseph) Creswell. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew J. and Annie Utick, and Robert S. and Carol Utick, all of Helena; his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Steve Harlen of Jesup, Ga.; grandchildren: Christine (Mrs. Kent) Swendseid of Bozeman; Kimberly Utick, Andrea Utick, Steven Utick, Jennifer Utick (Mrs. Robert) Marshall, all of Helena; Lisa Harlen (Mrs. Wesley) Blackwood of Evans, Ga.; and Amy Harlen of Athens, Ga.; the light of his life, his one great-grandchild, McKayla Marshall of Helena; and his very special friend, Nikki Smith. Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. today, May 18, 2004, at Retz Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tom O'Donnell officiating. Interment will be at St. Ann's Cemetery in East Helena. Pallbearers will be Wesley Blackwood, Robert Marshall, Kent Swendseid, Bill Bahny, Greg Bahny and Larry Beaver.
