Description	:	Andrew Maland, proprietor and editor of the Slater News, was born in Palestine township, January 19, 1874. His parents were both born in Norway and were married there, coming to the United States in 1860. When 16yrs. old, Andrew attended the State Normal School at Cedar Falls, working for his board and to pay his expenses. He also attended Highland Park College and at 19 began teaching. Going to Slater, he formed a partnership with O. J. Viland and purchased a furniture business. Read More	Andrew Maland, proprietor and editor of the Slater News, was born in Palestine township, January 19, 1874. His parents were both born in Norway and were married there, coming to the United States in 1860. When 16yrs. old, Andrew attended the State Normal School at Cedar Falls, working for his board and to pay his expenses. He also attended Highland Park College and at 19 began teaching. Going to Slater, he formed a partnership with O. J. Viland and purchased a furniture business. In 1902 they purchased the Slater News, a weekly newspaper, and Mr. Maland continued its publication under the same title. President Roosevelt appointed him postmaster of Slater in 1906, a position he still occupies. His printing plant and postoffice demanding his entire time, he and Mr. Viland mutually agreed to sever their business relations, Mr. Viland taking the furniture store. Andrew was married on Oct. 10, 1900 to Miss Bessie Wald, who was previous to her marriage a popular teacher of Slater. They had two children: Ella B. and Obert J. Mrs. Maland was called from earthly scenes on Jan. 10, 1909. She was a woman of many estimable qualities and her death was the severest loss Mr. Maland has ever known.
