The following is Andrew Martin Johnson's obituary as it appeared in the Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, Dickinson County, Iowa, on Thursday, March 24, 1927: PIONEER MERCHANT DIED SUDDENLY A.M. JOHNSON, SR., PASSED AWAY ALMOST INSTANTLY EARLY MONDAY MORNING - A. M. Johnson, Sr., 82 years old, a pioneer merchant and resident of Spirit Lake for 57 years passed away very suddenly, Monday morning at his home. Mr. Johnson had gone out to clean off his sidewalk, but did not feel good and so expressed himself to Mr. Sarazine, who volunteered to complete the task. Mr. Johnson started for the house and fell while mounting the steps. Mr. Sarazine rushed to his assistant, but death was almost instantaneous. Mr. Johnson had been in his usual good health of late, having taken an active part in the taking of the inventory of the May Stores, up until a week before his death and only the day before was considering the changing of the second floor of his store building into living apartments. In the death of Mr. Johnson, Spirit Lake lost its pioneer merchant and most reliable citizen, who for over 50 years gave his very best to the community. He located here on October 14, 1870, bringing his original stock overland in three covered wagons from Ossian, Iowa. His original location at that time was in a cement building, on the present site of the F. M. Schroeder store, where he continued business for three years when he erected a two story frame building on the site of the present Johnson building. He continued to do business until his 50th anniversary, when he disposed of his stock and retired. Mr. Johnson has ever been a strong supporter of community interests and public welfare has always occupied his most undivided attention. He was a man eminently fitted to mold the rude elements of pioneer society into form and consistency, and aid in raising the high standard of citizenship. How much this community owes him, and such as he, it is impossible to estimate, though it would be a grateful task to trace his influence through some of the more direct channels, to hold him up in his various characters, of husband and father, of neighbor and friend. He lived nobly and died in peace with all. He enjoyed the confidence and patronage of the public to such an extent that the Johnson Department Store was known over a large territory throughout northern Iowa and southern Minnesota......(unreadable) The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church, Wednesday afternoon. The funeral sermon was preached by Dr. Arrasmith, district superintendent of the Sheldon district, assisted by Rev. J. F. Hutchinson. Internment was made in Lakeview cemetery. The Masonic organization attended the funeral in a body. Andrew Martin Johnson was born at Risor, Norway, on July 14, 1844, and spent his early years at that place. At fourteen years of age he was confirmed in the Lutheran church and remained a member of it until 1871, when both he and his wife affiliated with the Methodist church in this city. He remained and was one of its most prominent workers. At the time of his death he was president of the official board of the church. In 1865, at the age of twenty-one he came to the United States, landing at New York City. He immediately came west to Chicago and for the next few years worked in different mercantile establishments there, and in Ossian, Iowa. At Ossian, in 1870, he made application for citizenship and three years later, at Spirit Lake, final papers were granted him by Judge Addison Oliver. He was one of the original incorporators of the city of Spirit Lake and served as one of its first trustees. In 1870, while at Ossian, he was joined in wedlock with Miss Amelia Dora Hansen and with his young bride moved to Spirit Lake to make his home. To this union a daughter, Anna Dorothea was born. Mrs. Johnson died soon after the birth of the child and six months later the child also died. He was united in marriage, four years later, in 1876 to Ella Crandell, a sister of Miss Alice Crandell, of this city. Death again robbed Mr. Johnson of a helpmate, when she died on October 3, 1909. Mr. Johnson again married in 1913 to Maude Kepner Hodgkinson and to this union a son, Andrew Martin, was born. A. M. Johnson Sr., died at Spirit Lake, Monday, March 21st, he being at the time, 82 years, 8 months, and 23 days of age. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two sons, A. M. Jr., and Andrew Martin, a daughter, Mrs. Paul Smith, of Rock Rapids, and a granddaughter, Ella Bell Johnson, a sister-in-law, Alice Crandell, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. A M. Johnson, Jr. Mr. Johnson was a member of numerous religious and fraternal organizations. He was made a member of Acturus Lodge No. 237, at Ossian, in 1868. He demitted to Spirit Lake, and became a charter member of Twilight Lodge, No. 329, being its first secretary. He advanced in Masonry joining Spirit Lake Lodge No. 132, Royal Arch Masons; Isdraelon commandry of Estherville, and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, of Des Moines. Mr. Johnson was also a member of Twilight Chapter No. 59 O.E.S. He was a member of the Masonic orders for 58 years.
