Miles City Independent, 29 Jul 1921 Another pioneer of Eastern Montana, one of the rapidly diminishing group that forty years ago laid the foundation of the civic edifice we now enjoy, was laid in his narrow bed in the Miles City cemetery on Sunday last after an unusually long and active life. Andrew McCleary Howard of the Rosebud, was born at Tamworth, New Hampshire, Sept. 14, 1826, and died at the ranch home of his daughter, Mrs. Freeman Philbrick, on the Rosebud, July 21, 1921, after a short illness, following a fall and the fracture of his hip, aged 95 years. He came to Montana in 1884 after having been engaged in the lumber and livestock business in Maine for a number of years, and located on what later became known as the “Old 20 Ranch.” He soon became a prominent figure in the Rosebud country and was known familiarly by his friends and neighbors as “Uncle Mac” and “Dad” and was respected and esteemed by all who knew him as one who was always ready with good counsel or a helping hand for those in need and worthy. Among his boyhood recollections, Mr. Howard treasured the remembrance of personal acquaintance with men who had fought in the Revolutionary War, as boys and young men of this age will many years hence recall veterans of the Civil War. Mr. Howard was descended from John Howard of Bridgewater, Mass., who came from England in 1640., and who lived in the family of Miles Standish. Mr. Howard’s wife, affectionately remembered in the Rosebud community as “Aunt Martha,” died seven years ago and was buried in the family lot in the Miles City cemetery. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Arnold E. Neate of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Freeman Philbrick on the Rosebud, beside three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
