Description	:	Andrew Qualley came from Norway on a sailing boat just previous to the Civil War. An uncle who had been drafted, was married and he paid Andrew to take his place. This was common practice and was legal, so Andrew served in the Civil War. In 1869, Andrew married Betsy Morheim in Cresco, Iowa. An uncle who had been drafted, was married and he paid Andrew to take his place. This was common practice and was legal, so Andrew served in the Civil War. In 1869, Andrew married Betsy Morheim in Cresco, Iowa. In 1879, Andrew and Betsy came from Iowa to Dakota Territory to homestead. Andrew bought a shack 16x18 and moved it out on their claim near Davenport. When Andrew was out threshing, Betsy dug sod and sodded the shack. They also made a sod barn. They hauled their wood from near the Sheyenne River, a distance of eighteen miles. Betsy raised her children to work hard and enjoy each other. After seven years on their homestead,they moved to a farm four miles east of Leonard. In 1927, they sold the farm and moved to Leonard into a new home built by Mr. Nelson, a carpenter living nearby. Andrew's health was bad. He had asthma caused by living conditions during the years he served in the Civil War. They were happy n Leonard and had many friends. He walked to the post office to visit as long as he was able. Later he was happy to sit in the corner windows at home and watch the children passing by. He liked to read, especially the "Decorah Posten" a weekly Scandinavian paper. Each Memorial Day, the American Legion would come to their home for a service. Betsy and Andrew would sit on the front porch while John Fey and other World War I service men would conduct the service. Granddaughter, Beverly with other would take part in the program always ending with the salute to the flag. Andrew always wore his Civil War suit on these occasions. Andrew died in 1925 at the age of 79 from acute asthma. He still had a full head of hair. He was buried in his civil War suit with full military honors in the Christiana Church Cemetery. Betsy was a midwife and in great demand. She was also called on for practical nursing. (See Betsy's bio) Andrew and Betsy had seven children: Sunray, Anna, Carrie, Emma, Henry, Lewis and Ovedia.
