He went to his uncle's home on the "Barney Duffing Corner". He worked on a farm, saved his money, and the following year sent money over to Denmark for his brother Chris to join him. Chris and his wife stayed farming in the Harlan area where their children eventually numbered 9. Andrew worked for the Alvin Hess family on a farm near Harlan for several years. Here he met Emma Degan from the area of Sharon in Audubon County, Iowa. She was also working at the Hess home.In 1917, Andrew and Emma were married. Andrew began farming for himself on the west edge of Harlan until 1922. Then they moved to Audubon Township, east of Exira (where Littlefield Park is now). This couple had six children: 1. Edward Swensen of Exira; 2. Virginia Swensen Barnholdt of Audubon; 3. Helen Swensen Hansen of Atlantic; 4. Leona Swensen Jensen of Audubon; 5. Mary Swensen Childers of Florida; 6. Eugene Swensen of Maryland. Andrew Swensen died in 1968 at the age of 75. Emma remained living alone in Exira after his death.
