Mrs. Smeins departed to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, December 3, 1949, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo after an illness of about two months. Mrs. Smeins was born Anna Bulten at Finsterwolde, Netherlands, on July 24, 1900. At the age of nine years her parents came to the United States and settle in this vicinity. On February 15, 1923, she was united in marriage to Fred Smeins and during their 26 years of marital happiness, five children were born. She is survived by her husband, Fred Smeins, and the five children: Catherine, Genevieve (Mrs. Wayne Neymeyer) Harlan, Eppogene, and Paul. There are two grandchildren: Gayle Ann and Douglas Neymeyer. Besides the immediate family she is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eppo Bulten of Aplington, and her sisters and brothers: Tena, (Mrs. Fred Arends) of Iowa Falls, Eppo of Geneva, Harm and George of Ackley, and Helen, (Mrs. John Nevenhoven) of Austinville. One sister preceded her in death. Her personal faith and Christian life were evident to all who knew her. On November 4, 1928, she made personal profession of her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and received the sacrament of baptism. The welfare of the church of Christ was upon her heart for she took active part in all church activities having been a member of the Ladies Aid for 15 years, and having taught in the Sunday School for 10 years. Some of the last words she spoke to her pastor were: God is my Helper and my Strength. It was with that assurance that she calmly faced life with its trials and sicknesses.
