History of the Hopwood's (Sometimes spelled Hopewood, but they are the same family if traced to Deep River, Iowa) William (died 10/7/1892, he was 85 yrs 2 mo. 21 days) & Ann Hopwood (1807 - 12/16/1890) immigrated to The United States from Wales. Their daughter was; Mary Elizabeth Hopewood (notice the E in her last name)() she married E.F. Weller (died 5/2/1820 - 28 yrs, 5 mo.11 days). Their son George Washington Hopwood (1/18/1836 - 6/28/1906) settled on a plot of land southeast of Deep River, Iowa. George was a farmer and later; a Dunkard preacher. He donated the land for the Dresden Cemetary and the combination; Baptist, Brethern and Dunkard Church. In 1875 Reverand Isaac Funk was installed as pastor. Two years later... in 1877, he fell from a hay stack onto a sharp stake and died instantly. George Washington Hopwood became the new pastor, but still farmed his own land. George married Mary Elizabeth Williams (7/27/1840 - 11/4/1923), who had immigrated to The United States from England. They were married 7/11/1863. They had 10 children who all lived. Their daughter Mary Elizabeth "Mamie" ( married Michael Adam Rank. The town of Dresden is now called "Old Town". It is one mile east of Deep River which grew into a large town when the new railroad put down tracks next to it.
