A year earlier, in honor of her 93rd birthday, the church saluted her as the oldest member of the church and one who, despite very limited income, still tithed regularly. The fifth born among six children of Patrick Henry Eubank and Sallie Herr Eubank of King William County, Ann Bell graduated in 1910 from what was then known as Mary Baldwin Seminary in Staunton, Va., now Mary Baldwin College. One of her favorite stories included the reaction of students to the appearance of Halley's Comet that year, an event so frightening, she said, those attempting to take an exam in science could not concentrate. While at Mary Washington she received many honors in art, according to the church program issued on her 93rd birthday. Later she accepted a position as an art teacher at Fredericksburg State Teachers College, now Mary Washington University. For the Richmond Art Company, Inc., she created hand painted lamp shades, coordinating the colors of the shades with those of vases and other items as they were requested. During the Depression and early years of World War II, she supervised a Federal Works Project Administration Activities. With her class of artists, she produced 20 dioramas on the story of Richmond for the Valentine Museum. "Catalogued in paint were the wild flowers of the state, designs for furniture, fans, costumes, iron grill work and other decorative items which became part of the Index of American Design," the church write-up said. "It was a dream come true when the artist was able to open her own studio in the Fan District of the City of Richmond. There with her art students, she was at her happiest. She was frequently commissioned for pastel, chalk and oil portraits and for still lifes. Two of her paintings hang in Ditchley in Hanover County and there are other paintings elsewhere. "The artistic productions of Miss Eubank are flavored by the influences of the Dutch Masters of the 17th Century. As to her style: the artist makes few intellectual demands upon the spectator, but rather requires a sharp eye. 'Everything I do has to be realistic. I can't stand modern art; it is the refuge of the incompetent.' "A former student rates Miss Eubank as a 'splendid' teacher: One able to inculcate into her students her own philosophy of 'what' art should be. Miss Eubank deplores the 'abuse' and 'misuse of art.' Of paramount importance are atmosphere, surroundings, spatial considerations: hung just an inch above eye level; a bit too far apart distorts the entire work. "Mrs. Martha Wood, proprietor of the Art Market, who has served Miss Eubank's needs for supplies for years, was laudatory in her comments regarding her client. 'She has a wonderful eye for color--pastels.' Also, in the past, has been exceptional in the painting of portraits of children. "Miss Eubank, whose life has been enriched by a wide range of experiences, is now known for her mental agility, a sense of humor, rote memory and as an ever-entertaining conversationalist." During her life time, portraits painted by Ann Bell were all over Richmond. After losing her studio to fire in 1970, one located in a former, one-story coach house off Grove Avenue, Miss Eubank did not establish a second one and moved instead to a private home in the north side of Richmond where she remained open to orders for work. "When you go to Washington again and have the time to go to the National Art Gallery (the old part I think), ask to be shown where the Index of American Design is housed," she wrote a family member. "That is work done by artists all over the U.S. during the WPA days. You will see something I did. I also have some different kind of work here in the Valentine Museum."
