Visitation is at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Ann J. Aaker, 84, Bison, died peacefully from this life Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the Sturgis Community Long Term Care Center. She was born Jan. 13, 1920, to Edward and Mary (Van Wyk) Anderson. She was the first of five children. She was raised in rural Perkins County and graduated from high school in Sorum. On Aug. 4, 1941, she married Adolph Aaker in Baker, Mont. They farmed and ranched on various places before purchasing their land west of Bison in 1943. They worked hard to make their farm more than just a sod house. They continued adding to the place, first cows, sheep, and chickens and eventually a daughter, Cleo, and a son, Arlen. They built everything from scratch and continued living there until they moved into Bison in the winter of 1991. Ann lost her husband in August of 1997. In 2000, she suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. She was able to stay home with her children until the summer of 2004. She spent time in the Spearfish Nursing home and the Sturgis Health Care Center, and she remained active until the end. She loved gardening, playing her guitar and harmonica, golfing, entertaining others at the Hettinger Nursing Home, and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an amazing cook with foods such as her famous fried chicken and her caramel rolls. She would spend hours thinking up fun ideas for her grandchildren such as performing countless songs and dances for the relatives, playing drive-inn from her kitchen window, golfing, bowling, and making mud pies. She gave her children and grandchildren the enjoyment of music, the importance of an education, and a zest for enjoying life. Survivors include a daughter, Cleo Wood, Newell; a son, Arlen Aaker, Bison; grandchildren Stacy (and Susan) Aaker, Andover, Minn., Daniel Aaker, Winner, Larry Aaker, Vermillion, Julie Nelson, Dallas, Texas, Paula (and Dan) Janovy, Spearfish, and Jennifer Wood, Newell; a sister, Maxine and Marvin Colburn, Hanning, Minn.; two brothers, Martin and Esther Anderson, Hettinger, N.D., and Harold Anderson, Lodgepole; a sister-in-law, Lois Anderson; five great-grandchildren; and numerous friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mary Anderson; her husband, Adolph Aaker; a sister, Margo; a brother-in-law, Alden Willey; a brother, Howard Anderson; three sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and a son-in-law, Norman Wood.
