Gorman was born 1831 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama the eldest of 2 known surviving children (both daughters) born to Scottish immigrant John Gorman and his North Carolinian-born wife, Charlotte. Gorman was born 1831 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama the eldest of 2 known surviving children (both daughters) born to Scottish immigrant John Gorman and his North Carolinian-born wife, Charlotte. Little is know of her ancestry, other than her father died in 1838, when she and her sister were quite young. Her widowed mother was last noted in Tuscaloosa County in 1850 with both her daughters. On December 16, 1852, the 21-year old married 25-year old Benjamin Wesley Justice, a young teacher from Wake County, NC. After the marriage, the couple settled in Tuscaloose where Benjamin taught at a boy's academy and where the first two of their 3 sons were born. The couple would become parents to 3 known children: John Gorman Justice (1853-1928), David J. Justice (c. 1857) and James H. Justice (1860-1877). In about 1859, the couple returned to North Carolina when her husband returned home to care for his widowed mother and the family farm. Their quite homelife ended soon with the coming of the Civil War, and 4 years separation as her husband served as Captain with Company E of the NC 47th Regiment. Following the war, in about 1868-69, the couple relocated to Raleigh where Benjamin eventually went to work for A. G. Lee & Company. Life was good until her husband was accidentally killed at work when he fell through an open hatch-way on the third floor of the A.G. Lee & Company Store where he was supervising the hoisting of some cotton bales. Benjamin Wesley Justice died on the morning of September 22, 1871 at the young age of 44. Ann, then only 40-years old, never remarried. She remained in Raleigh and was cared for by her sons. In 1877, she lost her youngest son, who was only 19 years old. Perhaps the grief and loss was too great for her to bear, for by 1900 Ann was an inmate at the NC State Hospital (for the insane) where she remained until her death in in 1911 at age 80. As for her surviving two sons, John Gorman & David J., both married while still living in Raleigh. John married Martha Fendt, daughter of German-born Raleigh Confectioner, Henry Fendt. They would have two sons, and later relocated to Waycross, GA. David married a young woman named Sarah in about 1880, but he later years he was found as a widower with no children. He moved to South Carolina and is believed to have died in Louisville, KY.
