Anna Almina Gerdes was born November 6, 1913 at Hecla, South Dakota to Hey and Tena (Meyer) Gerdes. Anna grew up roaming the prairie and climbing trees near her family home West of Hecla. As a young woman, she worked for several families in the area cleaning their homes and helping with the children. She was united in marriage to Clyde Connell Mitchell on August 5, 1942, and to this union six sons and one daughter were born. The couple farmed in the Hecla area until 1961, when they moved to Glendale, California where they continued to raise their family. In 1984, they moved to Sun Valley, California, and enjoyed their retirement, gardening and traveling. Anna's greatest love was her family, and for them she made many quilts that her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will enjoy for years to come. Anna was known in her neighborhood for being a great baker. Fresh bread, cinnamon rolls and cookies could always be found at her home, and she always welcomed her kids, grandkids, friends and neighbors to come in and enjoy the fresh baked goodies. Mr. Mitchell died on May 10, 1992. Anna enjoyed spending her summers in the Dakotas and winters in California until 2002, when her health started failing and she made her home in Hecla. In 2006, she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law in rural Ludden, North Dakota. Anna passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Darlene and son-in-law, John Schroeder on Sunday, May 18th, 2008, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. She was 94 years old. She will be missed by her seven children, Clyde "Bill" (Sandy) Mitchell, Glenn Mitchell, Donald (Pat) Mitchell, Hei (Pam) Mitchell, George (Conda) Mitchell, Darlene (John) Schroeder and Tim (Robin) Mitchell; fifteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two step-great-granddaughters. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Herman Gerdes, and a sister, Louise Boss.
