Mrs. Callahan was born September 14, 1930, in Manchester, Iowa, to George and Esther (Hansen) Jaycox. She was a graduate of the Manchester High School and completed a nursing degree at Finley Hospital, Dubuque. Anna Belle was a Registered Nurse, first at Manchester Community Hospital and later at DeWitt Community Hospital for 35 years, until retirement. Callahan, 81, of DeWitt, died early Wednesday morning, September 28, 2011, in Westwing Place in DeWitt, Iowa. Mrs. Callahan was born September 14, 1930, in Manchester, Iowa, to George and Esther (Hansen) Jaycox. She was a graduate of the Manchester High School and completed a nursing degree at Finley Hospital, Dubuque. Anna Belle was a Registered Nurse, first at Manchester Community Hospital and later at DeWitt Community Hospital for 35 years, until retirement. She also worked for Doctor Wallace Ash, M.D., in DeWitt, for several years. On Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1951, Anna Belle was united in marriage to Charles R. Callahan in St. Mary Catholic Church at Manchester. The couple resided at Manchester and later DeWitt where they have resided since 1955. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and the Altar and Rosary Society. Anna Belle enjoyed playing Bingo, traveling, cooking, crocheting, gardening, fishing and camping. She loved the time she spent with her family. Surving are her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, Chuck; children, Patricia Waack of DeWitt, Daniel L. (Denise) Callahan of Moline, Illinois, Constance Miller of DeWitt, James (Mary) Callahan of Clinton, Iowa, Susan (Jeff) Mossage of Aledo, Illinois, Catherine Callahan and Barbara (Larry) Mork of DeWitt, and Penelope (Lane Burgess) Callahan of Spokane Valley, Washington; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchldren; sisters, Betty Brown of Madison, Wisconsin, Jackie (Frank) Ratzlaff of Manchester, and Emma Jane Reed of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and nieces and nephews. Preceding Anna Belle in death were her son, Michael, an infant son, a grandson, Jerome William Waack, an infant grandson Mork, her parents, a sister, June, and a son-in-law, Warren Waack. The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3 until 7 p.m. Friday, September 30, 2011, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Fr. Paul Connolly will officiate with burial in Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
