Schuh was Deacon, Rev. Volmecke was sub-deacon Anna (Hackman) Schmitt, a daughter of Gerhard and Maria Angela (Kuennen) Hackman, she was born at Decatur, Indiana November 22, 1968. When she was 13 years of age she came to Iowa and first settled in the vacinity of St. Lucas. On October 2, 1890 she married Chris Schmitt at St. Lucas, Iowa. Soon after their marriage they purchased a farm near Fort Atkinson, Iowa where they made their home until a few years ago they built a home and retired to town. there were 9 children born to this union, five of whom survive: Ben Schmitt of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Sister M. Clareen (Amilia M. Schmitt) of Dubuque, Iowa, Lavena (Mrs. Will Bromart) of Pochantas, Iowa, Leo C. Schmitt of fort Atkinson, and Hilda at home. Mrs. schmitt was devout member of the Catholic church and died fortified by its last rites. Her faith enabled her to bear her suffering and accept her lot calmly receiving her consolation in prayers. She was a member of the Rosary Sodality. The pallbearers were Peter Criener, Peter T. Schmitt, Conrad Schmitt, Anton Hackman, Henry Hackman, Wm. Schmitt, all nephews. She is also survived by two brothers, Jos. Hackman of New Hampton and Gerhard of St. Lucas and 13 grandchildren. Her daughter Hilda and niece Mrs. Elizabeth Parent, and Mrs. Mary Schissel were at her bedside when she died. Children from a distance attending the funeral were Sister M. Clareen (Amilia) and her companion, Sister M. Prudencia of Dubuque, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Bromart of Pochantas, and niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Parent of Decatur, Indiana. and many other relatives and friends.
