Lundell - In Sweden, that land of brave and independent people, Anna Christine Peterson was born, May 5, 1850. Her girlhood was spent in small village known as Lyrestads Congregation. In the spring 1869 at the age of 19, she was married to August Lundell also a native Sweden. The young couple devoted their energies toward making an honest living. Knowing the greater opportunities in America, they determined to leave their native country and come to this land of promise. Accordingly, they came to Swedes Bend, in Iowa, in 1873, locating on a farm southwest of Stratford. By 1877 the little family was growing, and an opportunity to work in Harris Mill prompted Mr. Lundell to move to Cass township, where the family settled on what is now known as the James Kepler farm. When the Rev Jesse Moore came to the Cass Center community and organized and bu8lt the Cass Center church, the family gladly affiliated with the congregation and Mr Lundell helped erect the church building. Cold weather and long distance to travel did not prevent them from coming to worship their Master. Mr and Mrs Lundell were the parents of 8 children, four of whom are now deceased: Augusta (Mrs Will Studley), John, Oscar, and Archie. Those still living are Dr Henry W Lundell, Anna (Mrs Gus Ahrends), Agnes (Mrs Arthur Fink) all living in Webster City and Alvin of Chicago. Jan 28, 1890, the family circle was sadly broken by the sudden death of Mr Lundell who was stricken by a heart attack while attending his 17 year old son, John, who was so desperately ill that he too died in a few hours. Thus the mother was left with a family of seven children to support, the eldest being a daughter of 18, and the youngest, a son aged five years. Though well nigh prostrated with grief, she would not allow her spirit to sink, but set to work at once to care for her family. Moving to Webster City she began working at whatsoever her hands found to do. She kept her family together, taught them the duty and the glory of honest labor and prayed only for strength to bear her burdens. No complaint was ever heard from her. She had no benefit of widow's pension, nor did she know of such a thing as relief, but by the energy of her soul and the toll of her hands, she carried on and never bowed before depression or deprivation. Her mother heart was sorely grieved by the subsequent death of three more of her children, Augusta, Oscar and Archie, all of whom she mourned deeply, yet she gave them up as one who feels that the home beyond has need of those who go before. Bowing to the will of the Infinite, she rejoiced that she was able to carry on for those who still needed her cheer and assistance. One is amazed at the marvelous courage she possessed, the cheerfulness she invariably showed, and the dauntless integrity and determination with which she, unaided, met and conquered all trials. With supreme faith in God, she gave her labor. Her little home over on James street was her castle. There she was happy and there in the later years she radiated contentment and love to all who came. As the toll of years increased, she still retained remarkable vigor both of mind and body, and kept up her home until this summer when physical weakness forced her to her bed. Her four remaining children attended her every wish. Cheerfully she waited to be called home, content with the blessings and unmindful of the hardships in her useful life of 91 and one half years. In perfect possession of her faculties, she visited with her friends and complained not of pain, growing weaker very gradually, until Oct 29, when she quietly slipped away to the great beyond. A blessed memory remains as we say "Farewell; where thou hast gone, adieus and farewells are unknown." Contributed by #49499172 - Alvin Oscar Lundell is also a child of Anna and August. His oldest brother and father died on the same day in Webster City, Iowa, of Typhoid. Anna moved into town and started a laundry business to support her family. Alvin went on to become a veterinarian for the U.S. Government and later for Albright & Nell of Chicago.
