July 2, 1947 - Carroll Times - The distinction of being the first white "young lady" to live in Carroll belongs to 93-year-old Mrs. Ann Steigerwalt, whose family came here in 1868 when she was 14 years old. There were just two other white families in the "town" then, she remembers, the Kidders and the Pattys. Her father, James Colclo, started a hotel here, which he owned many years. Mr. Kidder was a railroad man, while Dr. J.M. Patty was the first physician in Carroll. His daughter, now Mrs. E.M. Shepard, was the first white girl child born in Carroll. The Colclo family had moved to this state from a farm near Columbus, Ohio, 13 years before, in 1855. Mrs. Steigerwalt was a year old then and Iowa as a state nine years old. The Colclos settled first in Madison county, moved from there to a farm near Coon Rapids and then to Carrollton. They came to Carroll shortly after the railroad was built through here. Because of the railroad, the town grew rapidly, Mrs. Steigerwalt recalls. Food and other articles, difficult to obtain in towns not on the railroad could be shipped into Carroll by train. More and more families joined the first three in Carroll. "When we'd get up in the morning, we'd see men hauling lumber and building a house on what had been just another vacant lot the night before," the Carroll woman remembers. "Some of these temporary structures were really built almost overnight; later they were torn down and replaced with more permanent homes." Most of the land was still prairie when the Colclos came to Carroll county. Their daughter can recall seeing prairie fires here similar to the ones in the Dakotas in the early 1900's. "Often we'd have no warning at all until we saw the flames sweep over a hill," she said. "I remember one time when we lived near Coon Rapids a prairie fire missed our barn by not more than the width of this house (about 30 feet). My father had to build a back fire to save the buildings." Men often would get together to burn strips of land wide enough that a prairie fire would not leap across them, as a protection for their farms. Only breaks in the prairie, other than the few scattered settlements and farms, were the mud roads. Travel was really difficult in those days. There were not even any buggies in Carroll when the Colclos first came here; everyone used spring wagons. Mrs. Steigerwalt remembers several years later she and another girl thought it quite an adventure when they rode in an open-top buggy from here to Glidden and back again with the then county superintendent of schools. Closed buggies came into use here even later. After their graduation from high school here in June 1870, Mrs. Steigerwalt, Ruth Johnson (later Mrs Culbertson) and Orville Johnson started to Iowa State college at Ames in July. The college had been open for instruction earlier that year. A farm near Storm Lake was the Steigerwalts home a short time after their marriage in 1878. When they sold that place, they moved to a farm east of Carroll, where they stayed a number of years. Their next home was Ames, where two of their sons attended Iowa State college. From Ames the family went to Idaho in 1920. Mrs. Steigerwalt returned from there to Carroll about four years ago, because many of her relatives live in this vicinity. The aged woman is the last living member of a family of 10 children. Her own children are Sam, Nevada; McKinley, Spirit Lake; Franks, San Francisco; Garfield, Glidden, and Mrs. Homer Zimmerman (Blanche), Los Angeles. Oct 11, 1947 - Carroll Times - Mrs. Anna Steigerwalt, 93, Carroll pioneer, died at 1:25 this morning at the Tryon Nursing home, 109 North Main street, where she had lived since the first of last May. Her death occurred five weeks and one day after she suffered a broken hip in a fall. The body is at the Huffman Funeral home, awaiting completion of arrangements. Mrs. Steigerwalt came to Carroll with her parents , James and Hannah Colclo, shortly after the railroad was built through here. It was in the days of prairie fires, mud roads and spring wagons. She was born Anna Colclo February 9, 1854, at Sandusky, O. The family moved to Iowa from a farm near Columbus, O., in 1855. Mrs. Steigerwalt was then one year old and Iowa, as a state, was nine years old. The family settled in Madison county, moving from there to a farm near Coon Rapids, thence to Carrollton, and later to Carroll, where the father opened a hotel which he owned for many years. Mrs. Steigerwalt was known as the first white "young lady" in Carroll, when she came here in 1868 at the age of 11. There were only two other white families living iiere then, the Kidders and the Pattys. After her graduation from Carroll high school in June 1870, Mrs. Steigerwalt entered Iowa State college, Ames, in July. The college had been open for instruction earlier that year. She taught school prior to her marriage to W.F. Steigerwalt, which took place at Denison in 1878. A farm near Storm Lake was the couple's home for a short time. After selling this place they moved to a farm east of Carroll, living there a number of years. Their next move was to Ames, where two of their sons attended Iowa State college. From Ames, Mrs. Steigerwalt went to Payette, Idaho in 1920. She returned from there to Carroll four years ago last May, and until she went to the nursing home in the spring, had her own apartment here. Her husband died in July, 1915. Mrs. Steigerwalt leaves four sons and one daughter, Sam Steigerwalt, Nevada, Ia.; McKinley, Spirit Lake; Frank, San Francisco; Garfield, Glidden, and Mrs. Homer Zimmerman, (Blanche), Los Angeles, Calif. Other survivors include grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was the last of a family of 10 children, one of whom was C.C. Colclo of Carroll. Mrs. Steigerwalt was a member of the Methodist church. She also belonged to the Eastern Star chapter, Rebekah lodge, and Past Noble Grands association, having headed the Rebekah lodge in Payette. She was a member of the Daily Times Herald Three Quarter Century club.
