Kemper Dies at Almost a Century- Hamilton County's second oldest resident, so far as data can be obtained, departed from earth on Wednesday of last week when Mrs. Anna E. Kemper, in her 97th year, passed quietly to sleep. "Grandma Kemper," as she was lovingly known to all, had retained her mental faculties to a remarkable degree and enjoyed the companionship of her loved ones and all acquaintances long after the physical infirmities of age had laid their hand upon her. Mrs. Kemper's bright old age and the fact that she was born on the 29th of February and had enjoyed a birthday but once in each four years had attracted attention far beyond the precincts of her home community. City papers several years ago had fine stories concerning this remarkable woman and post cards came to her by hundreds from all sections of the country. She was at all times surrounded by the most loving of her descendants and her latest years of the long journey on earth were spent in happiness akin to that of childhood. Mrs. Anna E. Kemper was born in Germany, February 29th, 1824. She came to America in 1846 and soon after her arrival became the wife of Mr. George Kemper. For eleven years they made their home in Philadelphia. In 1857, with a family of small children, they journeyed to Wisconsin, where they resided until 1883. Believing that there were better opportunities for his growing sons and daughters in the west, the family came to Aurora, Neb., in that year, where they continued their residence. Mr. Kemper passed away in 1898. After a long sojourn, Mrs. Kemper peacefully closed her career upon earth Wednesday evening, May 16, 1920, aged 96 years, 2 months and 19 days. The funeral service was held Friday, May 28, 1920 at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W. Weingarten, and was conducted by Rev. J. A. Currie and Rev. H. H. Pollard, each of whom spoke briefly using some of the favorite passages of the deceased as a basis for comforting words. In addition, Tennyson's poem, "Crossing the Bar," was read by Mr. Pollard. Early in life Mrs. Kemper devoted her life to the service of Christ and was a member of the German Evangelical church. She had the advantages of a good education and memorized much of the Bible and many of the great poems which she enjoyed repeating over and over. She was fond of music and sang a great deal during her latter years and the old hymns brought strength and comfort to her as the shadows of life lengthened and the evening came on apace. Many tributes could be brought to so long and beautiful a life. She bound her friends to her with her own great friendship. Being of a retiring disposition on account of an affliction which handicapped her in the matter of making a large acquaintanceship, yet she drew many to her as they passed her way. She was pleased to greet everyone who came into her presence with a happy smile and an outstretched hand. Her home and children were a happy world for her and her great desire was to do for them – to train, to love, to encourage, to inspire. Her sons and daughters were her children to the end, although she realized their maturity and gloried in their achievement. As a mother, she was proud of all of them and had the supreme satisfaction of having their full love in return. For those introduced into her love by marriage, there was plenty of room in her motherly heart and they were also her children. Her many friends constantly brought her flowers in recent years and upon the occasion of the funeral, the floral offerings were many and beautiful. Three of Mrs. Kemper's children passed away in infancy. A son, H. W. Kemper, who was active in building up the town of Aurora in the early days, died in Denver about twelve years ago. The surviving children are Mrs. A. B. Friedrich, Platteville, Wis.; Mrs. Louis Bald, E. L. Kemper and Mrs. W. Weingarten of Aurora; Mrs. C. P. Fall, Beatrice, Nebr., and A. G. Kemper, Bayard, Nebr. There are also 24 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
