Her maiden name was given in her obituary as Meashon, and in her husband's obituary, her maiden name was given as McShon. According to her death record at the Wapello County Court House, her maiden name was Mershon, and her father's name was shown as Benjamin Mershon. Also, the birth date that I am using on this memorial is approximate. Anna's death record gave her date of birth as June 22, 1855. Her obituary gave her date of birth as June 31, 1835, and there are only 30 days in June. Anna is shown in the 1880 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, as being born in approximately 1836, and I am using June 30, 1935, as her birth date on this memorial. Anna's obituary states that she was born in Putnam County, Kentucky. I have not been able to determine if such a county ever existed in Kentucky, but her death record and the census records do say that she was born in Kentucky. Anna's obituary also states that she was buried in the Berg Cemetery. There is no such cemetery in Wapello County, and I do not believe there is any cemetery in Iowa with that name. Anna's death record at the Wapello County Court House states that she is buried in Burns Cemetery. Neither her husband nor Anna are shown as having gravestones in the WPA readings of the cemeteries. This could be an oversight, or if they had gravestones, they might have been missing by the time the WPA readings were done in the 1930s. Anna's obituary also states that she was married to A.C. Eslinger in 1851. His obituary states they were married in 1858, and I have not been able to verify which is correct. Anna's obituary states that she was the mother of 14 children. Her husband's obituary states that they had 13 children. I do not know how many children Antoine and Anna actually had; however, all but two of their known children, Letta and Stephen Albert, are linked to their memorials. Letta, age 4, was listed in the 1870 Census of Wapello County with her parents and siblings. That is the only place I found Letta listed, and I have not found a record of her death or burial place. Stephen Albert married Sarah Emily Doan on November 17, 1883, in Wapello County. Before his marriage, he is listed in the census records with his parents as Albert. After his marriage, he is shown in all of the records as Stephen. There was a short obituary published in the "Ottumwa Weekly Courier," of October 23, 1889, for a S.A. Eslinger, age 29, who died of typhoid pneumonia at 9 p.m. on October 20, at his home on the South side of Ottumwa. I believe this was Stephen; however, no burial place was given, nor is there a death record for him in Wapello County. Stephen and Sarah had one son, Absalom Eslinger, and the continuation of his line may be followed from his findagrave memorial. Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," August 11, 1910: Anna E. Meashon [sic] was born in Putnam county, Kentucky June 31 [sic], 1835. When a child her parents moved to Indiana. She was married to A.C. Eslinger Nov. 21, 1851. They moved to Iowa in 1853 and located near Ottumwa. Her husband preceded her in death in 1899 [sic]. She was the mother of fourteen children, five of whom survive her. Those in Ottumwa are Martha F. Wallace, Jane Price, Margaret Selex [sic], Edward M. Eslinger [sic-should be Edward N.], and Mrs. Laura Folland [sic] of St. Louis. She leaves eighteen grand children and two great-grandchildren. From early life she was a member of the Congregational church. The funeral was held Aug. 9th at the home of her daughter Mrs. Selex [sic] on North Davis street. Interment in the Berg [sic] cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. Johathan Lee of the South Ottumwa Baptist church.–Contributed.
