She is survived by her two daughters: Annette Broadwell (Buzz Borchardt) of Chapel Hill and Libby Broadwell (Larry Gulde) of Chapel Hill; and her three grandchildren: Tyree (Ty) Broadwell Darnell, Elijah (Eli) Pell Broadwell Darnell, and Anna Broadwell-Gulde. Born on a family farm, the sixth of seven children, Anna grew up with an abiding love of family and a great appreciation of nature. At a time when many girls did not attend college, her parents believed it was especially important for girls to be educated. Having skipped one grade and attending public school when there were only 11 grades, Anna left home at 16 to attend Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University), returning to work in tobacco on the family farm during summers to help pay her college expenses. Following her graduation four years later, she began her teaching career in White Plains, NC, where she met Tyree K. Broadwell, whom she married in 1943 and with whom she shared life and love until his death in 2011. After teaching in Westfield during the time Tyree was stationed overseas in the U.S. Army, the couple moved to Angier, in Harnett County, where Tyree had grown up and where they lived for seven years and where her brother and sister-in-law Bob and Jane Broadwell still live. Hoping to buy a farm halfway between their respective home places and birth families, Anna and Tyree found a farm in Guilford County which seemed ideal. There they made their home, raised their daughters, grew large gardens along with tobacco, soybeans, and wheat; had cattle, and any number of horses, and dogs and cats (often strays that found their way to the farm and were welcomed). In Greensboro, where Tyree worked at U.S.S. Agri-Chemicals and Anna taught 4th grade for many years at Bessemer Elementary School, they were longtime members of Bessemer United Methodist Church. Anna was a very conscientious teacher who was known for caring about each student, encouraging excellence, and treating all equally and fairly. Aside from the pleasure she took in instructing and encouraging young students, Anna enjoyed hosting family gatherings, reading (always reading), and watching the sun come up or the evening approach from her back porch, where she might be sharing her rocker with one of her grandchildren during their young years. She had a special knack for making all guests feel welcome. She was very observant of people’s feelings, very respectful of individual differences, found goodness in everyone, and had a very inclusive spirit. Her children, her grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, and her students always found her to be a good listener. The family has more gratitude than it can express for the wonderful caregivers who have been so helpful and have enriched Anna’s life manyfold over the years, especially Shirley Allen, who has been a faithful companion and friend for 14 years; Suzanne Bowman, for ten years; Sandra Cates, for three years; and Susan Lambley, for two years; and, previously, Liz Tisdale and Debbie Cook and many others who served Anna so well. (In addition to her husband Tyree, Anna was preceded in death by her parents and all her brothers and sisters (and spouses)—Tom Pell, Ralph Pell, Claude Pell, Mallie P. George, Nellie P. Greene, and Dellie P. Owens.—and her brother and sister-in-law Japert and Janet Broadwell.) A Memorial Service for Anna will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 15, 2017, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, McLeansville, where she was a member these last few years and where the family will receive guests following the service. A family graveside committal service will take place at Westfield Friends Meeting Cemetery in Pilot Mountain the following afternoon.
