Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with vigil and rosary to follow at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Tennant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am. Anna was born Oct. 14,1901, to John Ertle and Mary Anna (Lechert) Ertle in Volmer, Russia. In 1911, one year after her father came to America, she, her mother and five siblings also immigrated to the United States,. landing in New York and moving to Colorado shortly afterwards.Growing up in the Proctor and Iliff area, Anna and her seven brothers and five sisters attended Dillion School. Mrs. Stuart taught Anna up to the fifth grade, at a one room coun try schoo the Dfflion Ranch. The Ertle family made their living in agriculture, working beets. During the winter months the Ertle family lived in Iliff. Anna took in laundry during this time to help out with expenses. Anna met and later married her husband, John Gertner, on Feb. 16, 1920. The Gertner family, also from Volmer, came over to the United States in 1912. Anna and John were married by Father Sasasse at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sterling. After their wedding Anna and John lived and worked in the Padroni area. In 1928 they rented a farm and worked it through 1955, when they then moved itito Sterling. Anna and John had 13 children, the first being born in February 1921 and the last in June 1945. After moving to Sterling, John worked at the sugar factory, McDonald Hay Mill and Sterling Alfalfa Mill. He retired in 1964. Throughout the marriage, Anna was a homemaker, house wife and mother of seven boys and six girls. Anna became a citizen of the United States on Dec. 11, 1956, 15 years after her husband, who became a citizen of the United States on June 11, 1941. On May 15, 1988,68 years after marrying John, he, passed away. After years of hard work, hard times and loving her family, Anna spent her days at Devonshire watching Mass and the "Price is Right" on TV saying the rosary reading the Bible and visiting with her children, her children's families and friends. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church since moving to this area. Anna was unable to do her favorite things, like sewing, embroidery work, baking, canning, baby-sitting her grandchildren and attending family functions, because of poor eye sight and arthritis. Anna is survived by her children John Gertner Jr., Gabriel Gertner and wife Barbara, Marcus Gertner and wife Florence, Clarence Gertner and wife Dorothy, Lawrence Gertner and wife Marylyn, Donald Gertner and wife Sylvia and Clara Marie, all of Sterling, David Gertner of Castle Rock, Josephine Amerin of Plains, Kan., Virginia Amerin and husband Ralph of Johnson, Kan,, Sister Leonette of Milwaukee, Wis,, and Margaret Clapham of Denver; brother John Ertle and wife Elaine of Grand Junction; 65 grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 116 great- grandchildren and four great- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John .Gertner; daughter Anna Mary Bretz; four sisters; six brothers; five grand children; four son-in-laws; and one daughter-in-law. Memorial contribution may be made to Masses and St. Anthony's Catholic School Fund.
