The Pawnee Chief (Pawnee City, NE.), P. 1, Col. 3 Wed., Dec. 4, 1935 CELEBRATED GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. John Perdew celebrated their golden wedding today, Wednesday, December 4. A wedding dinner was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Perdew at Lewiston, and the bride of groom of fifty years received cards of congratulations and best wished from their many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Perdew have been residents of Pawnee City and vicinity for over fifty years. They are numbered among our substantial citizens and held in high esteem by all who know them. It is hoped that they will enjoy many more years of health and happiness. Arnold Sentinel (Arnold, NE.), P. 2, Col. 2 Thu., May 21, 1936 Mr. and Mrs. Guy Stone and family returned home Tuesday morning from pawnee City where they had been called last Thursday night by the serious illness of Mrs. Stone's mother, Mrs. John Perdew. Mrs. Perdew had fallen on Mother's Day and broken her hip and for several days her condition was quite critical. She was somewhat improved when the Stones departed. The Pawnee Chief (Pawnee City, NE.), P. 5, Col. 5 Wed., Oct. 7, 1936 Mrs. John Perdew Was A Pioneer of County Passed Away at the Pawnee Hospital Last Week Following a Lingering Illness. Mrs. John Perdew, who had been in failing health for a long time, passed away at the Pawnee hospital Wednesday, September 30, and in her passing, death took from our community another pioneer of Pawnee county. Mrs. Perdew was born on a farm near Pawnee City over seventy-four years ago, and lived practically all of her life in this community. She cheerfully took her share of responsibility in the upbuilding of the community, ever responsive to the need of others, and had many friends who grieve over her death. Anna Hammond, daughter of Robert and Martha Hammond, was born on a farm near Pawnee City, Nebr., on Aug. 27, 1862, and passed away at the Pawnee City hospital, on Sept. 30, 1936, after a long illness. After receiving her education she taught in the Pawnee county schools for several years. On Dec. 2, 1885, she was united in marriage to John Perdew and to this union nine children were born; Claude of Sargent, Nebr.; Mrs. Guy Stone, Arnold, Nebraska; Lyle, Neligh, Nebr.; Ted, Palm Springs, Calif.; and Hazel, Lee and Lawrence of Pawnee City, Alice and Katherine having preceded her in death. She is also survived by one sister, Miss Etta hammond of Lincoln, Nebr., and a brother, Will Hammond of Medford, Okla., twenty-four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Seventy-four years ago when Mrs. Perdew came into this world, this part of nebraska was newly settled. The men and women who came west were of sturdy pioneer stock. It was their courage and fortitude that made the development of this country possible. They bent their backs to a task which called for three utmost strength. They faced hardship and calamity and danger without fear, and upon the firm foundation of right and careful living they built a substantial structure that endures to this day. Into this growing community came Anna Hammond, who, as she developed into womanhood, took her share of responsibility and played her part in the great drama of the prairies, first as a school teacher, and then as a wife and mother. Life did not deal very easily with her through the years. The bearing and raising of a large family demanded much strength and sacrifice, and the many cares and toils that go with human endeavor took full toil of her strength. But amid it all she maintained a cheerful, optimistic spirit. When death and disaster came into the family circle, she never faltered, but confidently faced the future to give herself for those who still needed her. About a year ago, this useful, well-rounded career culminated in the fiftieth wedding anniversary, a golden anniversary of shining days. And then athwart the golden splendor of her evening sky came the gray clouds of sickness. The tired hands did not move again to do the tasks they loved to perform, and then the angel of death came and folded them peacefully as though they were at rest forever. Such beautiful hands, When heart was weary and sad, Those patient hands kept toiling on That the children might be glad. I often think as looking back To childhood's distant day; I think how those hands rested not, When mine were at their play. And O, beyond the shadow lands, Where all is bright and fair, I know full well those dear old hands Shall palms of victory bear; Where crystal streams through endless years, Flow over golden sands, And where the old grown young again, I'll clasp my mother's hands. The funeral service was held at the home last Saturday afternoon, Rev. W. N. Wallis officiating. Burial was in the Pawnee City Ceremony.
