Description	:	Anna “Hazel” Hiatt, 95, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at her home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery at Aurora. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Hiatt was born Sept. 21, 1919, at the family farm home west of Grainton to Bryan and Minnie (Glunz) McGahan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hiatt. Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Lavonne and Bill Komp of Waterloo, Ill., Mary and Terry Cook of Overton, Barbara Buttermore of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sherri and Terry Bruner of Double Oak, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard and Karen Hiatt of Lakeland, Fla., and Joe and Cindy Hiatt of Shawnee, Kan.; two sisters, Barbara Olivigni of Hickman and Margaret Berger of Omaha; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Hiatt of Lincoln; 15 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and friends. She was the oldest of the eight children and often stayed home from school to help care for her younger siblings. She attended country school and later went to school in Grainton. On Dec. 16, 1937, Hazel married Roy Hiatt at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wallace. Roy and Hazel farmed in the Elsie area for many years. She was actively involved in her children’s activities while they were in school as well as the church. Hazel was a member of the altar society in Elsie. The couple moved to Aurora in September 1980, where they lived for 18 years. In August of 1998, they moved to Riverside Lodge Retirement Community in Grand Island. Hazel and Roy celebrated 62 years together. Hazel enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading, playing cards, embroidery work, and making quilts for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed Kansas City Royals baseball, Nebraska football and volleyball, flower gardening and attending events involving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling extensively in the United States. Hazel became known as the family historian and she looked forward to family and extended family gathering each year at Thanksgiving in Grand Island. Hazel stayed active by walking the hallways of Riverside Lodge. She usually accomplished her walk early in the morning. She was a member of St. Leo’s Parish Community in Grand Island. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.
